Which Brake Pads?

I bought a set of ceramic brake pads from Bavauto this spring. My hopes were that they would produce less brake dust. I was wrong. Not only did they shed like a hairy cat in an oven, they are virtually GONE already, 9500 miles later. I have black Motegi wheels, and the brake dust is fairly annoying, and a PITA to get out of the corners and crevices of my wheels.

I have searched the forums, and naturally found a lot of dated info, and mixed opinions.

I would appreciate some honest advice for a new set of pads that will reduce my brake dust problems. This is my daily driver and I don't do any racing... It's a 325i. LOL

Look into Stoptech Street Performance pads. Not sure if they are made for your car, but they will dust relatively little and have good bite. If you want absolute minimal dust do a set of Stoptech Posi Quiets. They last forever and you could go 6 months without washing your wheels before noticing dust.

There is no such thing as a dust free pad which offers good bite, no noise, and will last a long time.

Akebono Euros dust very little, but squeak like a mofo and don't brake nearly as well as OE pads.

I bought akebono euro... I agree with AC_2007: they do squeak and they dont brake as good as the OE pads.

If I could do this again I'd try EBC red stuff.

The StopTech Street Performance pads are a pretty good route to go for "less dusting." Most of the time, ceramic pads are more intended for track days/higher paced driving which is probably why they died so fast with street driving....

I just installed Akebono Euro ceramics on an M3 and on a 750Li. They are completely silent and NO brake dust. They stop strong with a little less initial bite than stock - excellent for street driving, though. I've had them on for about 3 months now.

When I think of brake pads, I think about braking, which is the primary role of the braking system.

Your life is probably more important than whether your wheels get dusty...if not, maybe the life of your passengers...maybe that innocent child running across the street to get his ball?

Dust should not be on the list of 'qualities for a brake pad.'

You live in Detroit, OP...I'm pretty sure you want a brake pad that will stop you...in rain, snow, sleet...hot and cold.

My set up--balo blanks and OE (textar) pads--five years ago new on all four corners. 60K miles later, I only needed to replace front pads.

60K miles. In a manual, but still. 60K miles of OE bmw stopping power.

Dusting is not a characteristic you should consider for brakes; stopping is.

Pagid, the Porsche Motorsport pad is the real deal; the street compound to use is their "Endurance" pad (otherwise known as the Yellow Pad), called RS19; there's been an update and there is now a different and better compound RS29 I think. I've also used Porterfield R4-S which stops great. The R4E stops even better and the R4 stops so hard, it makes utterly mindblowing stops but they will be hard on the rotors, in the same way Hawk Blues are hard on rotors.

For further objective information, look in the October 2011 edition of Grassroots Motorsports where James Clay, the owner of Bimmerworld tests 7 different pads. The write up is quite god, and it's a good read.

Pagid uses the same compound as the OE textar from what I've read...not sure of those special blends you've mentioned.

Anyway, sounds like an interesting read. I tried to find it but couldn't. Any help?
