Hey there, I have a 330i 2004, I had the same issue, my RMP will bounce between 400 to 700 on idle and sometime it will stall. It is a problem with late model engine and I had it fix it by re-flashing a new version of the DME. You can ask to your BMW dealer, I think it's around 100$ OR you can do like me and find a good friend who has the BMW diagnostics program and did it for free

here is the bmw bulletin report: http://www.argyrides.eu/bmw/mods/stall/stall.htm

You can download the diagnostic program and buy a 30$ obd2 cable and have your own diagnostic program. ( you can code whatever you want like the dealer)
look in the bimmer forum for more info.

Anyone beside the "stealership" update the DME? My local dealership want's $199 and up to 6 hours to do the reflash.

You didn't say what you'd done to check for intake leaks. If you replaced the icv yourself, often the lower boot stays on, but it's not seated right.

There are lots of hoses that can crack/leak and I'd begin there before tossing money on reprogramming. Truth is, if it worked before, things were fine. That said, with your 'stuff' under the hood and stock header back on, maybe the old tune won't work well for what you have now...and if you do get it reprogrammed, then add the old headers back on, you'll end up with the same issue again.

...just another reason to keep things stock...makes it much easier to figure things out...although it can still be tough enough to be entertaining!

Good luck, OP!
Upcoming NYC dates: Jan 8 and 27. See Facebook for other shows and PM me if you can make one...love to see you there!

Mangofy your E46!

I installed the headers a few days ago. The car hasn't stalled again but the rpm will still jump. I found a receipt from the previous owners mechanic and it stated that the intake needed to be removed to find an intake leak. Service was not performed tho. So now I'm positive it's an intake leak. I'll find it eventually.

I replaced the ICV myself, haven't checked for vacum leaks, waiting on smoke machine. Car is all stock. Replaced plugs and pre-cat O2 sensors, cleaned MAF.
