Start with this:

How can I verify my vanos is failing?

Quote:
On M52TU engine cars (98/99-00) experiencing cold weather cold start idle jolts and possible stall, the vanos intake solenoid (metal cylinder) electrical connector can be disconnected. If the idle jolts cease then the problem is most likely the vanos.
If the above doesn't indicate a vanos problem, then given that you also have an oiled air filter, I'd recommend that you next try cleaning the MAF. Also wouldn't hurt to look for obvious signs of a vacuum leak. After that, you're going to have to get serious with the diagnostics and start scanning for codes, checking fuel trims, fuel pressures, etc.

Check te link I posted and check for vacuum leaks or lose intake connections/broken intake boots.
