I like to have the extra coolant on hand just in case anyway... and since I just got back from riding my bike to the dealer, I might as well go ahead and mix it and get to bleeding! lol They looked at me really funny showing up on a bike...

Worse than that, put it in a plastic bag and hung it from my handle bars... couldn't find a backpack.

Also, I just posted a new thread... somethings gone funky with my engine

Hour and a half into this job I have everything removed, and am ready to install after some beer. A couple quick questions on effective draining. I pulled both blue drain plugs located below the expansion tank, and the one on the side of the block. But...

I'm seeing standing coolant after removing the water pump. Normal?
When I pulled the lower radiator hose, the hose was full of coolant. Normal?

On my E30, once all the plugs are pulled you're not going to find any more coolant anywhere. I'm wondering if this is due to the E46 design, or indicates the system is plugged, or that I'm a dumbass and there is another place to drain from?

And yes, the car is level

Missed the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator?
Or did you remove the radiator?

If you drain the rad, you should be OK, but flushing with some distilled water would be better.
If your old coolant wasn't too bad, not as critical. But if it was overdue, best to get the spoiled stuff all out.

Does the bentley service manual detail the overhaul of the e46 cooling system? I was thinking about buying before tackling this project.

I own a Bentley and recommend you get one if you have a future with your car. That said, while the manual always has invaluable information, it is not the complete treatise on the e46 by a long shot.
If you had to choose between the Bentley and this board, I'd go with the latter. Guys here give you more real world perspective and tips and sometimes pictures. But when preparing for a project, you want as much in front of you as you can get.

There are plenty of guides online to get this done without a hitch. Most of it is incredibly straight forward. Just google "E46 Cooling overhaul DIY"

yes perfect timing indeed. I have a quick question.. I have a 99 323i manual. The other day I was parked, car idling, for several minutes when I looked at the dash and saw the temp needle just touching the red zone and the light came on just as I turned car off. I let it cool for a while and took it for a quick easy spin. Temp was still on the very high end, but just as soon as I got air flow from driving the needle immediately fell and went back to normal. Drove it easy for a bit and had no more issues. So question is... probable radiator fan failing or thermostat?

Could be thermostat. Have you checked your coolant level?

Could be either but the bottom line is you need 1) enough water/coolant, 2) proper and adequate flow (effective water pump, operational thermostat, and air free system), 3) air moving over the radiator (aux fan and/or mech. fan) to keep the car from overheating

could be air pockets, clogged radiator, t-stat, fans.

Sounds like air isn't moving over the radiator at idle. When the car is moving, naturally air flows over the radiator. Thats why your car cools as you drive

Don't drive it this way.
Agree my money on fan or thermostat.
Watch the fan at idle to see it spin?

Update:

Got engine hot in driveway, temp gauge staid at half, steady. Revved it hard from a bit. Fan never kicked on, but needle didn't budge. No errors in dash. Took fan out, spins easily by hand and it does kick on with a/c on as it should.

Not an expert but trying to narrow down the issues with out spending $$ I dont have...

Still thermostat? relays now???
