Always drops the drain plug
|
Mango, I just went through refreshing my entire cooling system. I bought the "E46 COOL AUTO" kit form Bavarian Autosport, but it was missing a couple key elements - notably the Expansion Tank Mounting Plate, and the Automatic Transmission Thermostat, which exploded when I took the old expansion tank out.
Thank you SO MUCH for your guide, the part numbers, and help on this. I am thrilled to know that my car is going to be healthy and fresh for years to come. You have saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. Keep it up, and keep on rockin'. |

successfully replaced my water pump/radiator/fan/shroud/thermostat using the parts/advice on this thread. thanks for the help (and saved me $750 by being able to do it myself!) THANKS!
just from my experience: don't bother trying to use random tools to take out the fan. either use the proper fan removal tool or at least a thin 32mm wrench. i was able to get one for $12 from a bike shop (they sold me one of their old ones) and use a screwdriver to keep the pulley steady; it took me 5 min vs. the 1 hour i tried with all the other tools in my garage. i also took the time to wire brush off some rust on the nut and put anti-seize compound on the threads. With an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver, I've released fans in 5-10 seconds. I've done it for a few members here. nice to have the "right" tool but isn't necessary if you're in a bind.

I tried that to start but I had a feeling I would have a tough time as the nut itself had surface rust on it. Maybe its the snow and excessive rain we get here and the fact that the cooling system hasnt been serviced since new that made it difficult for me. When I had it out, the threads did have rust on them too...i hope my case is isolated then! Either way the tool i got (park tools is the brand) has a 36mm on the other side so oil changes will be easier!

Change it out! wasn't that bad once all the parts came in to do it. and I've never worked on a bmw before. a little messy but doable. lucky for me it was -5 out when my tank exploded down the side so when i noticed the temp going up was able to park and get a tow. seems perfect now it's been about 1500 miles and no loss of fluid or leaks so pretty happy for that (thanks Breiwa1 for the help!!) at the same time we installed cross drilled and vented rotors on all 4's ceramic pads new sensors , and new tires .. thing rides sweet! car had 113k on it when it failed and got new rad, hoses, sensors, tstat all for about 300 the pump had been replaced before so didn't feel the need.
and in total about 4 hours to do it 1-1/2 dis-assembly and 2-1/2 to put it back together .. 2001 330xi |

Isn't it obvious?
If your "rate" is agreeable, I would ask for your help in rehauling my cooling system before it blows up I have a leak ![]() [bimmerapp]

Just curious. I've been getting lots of strange questions lately (both directly and indirectly) Where is it leaking from?

Wow. I figured you to be in your early 20s. SoCal climate and environmental factors probably helps a great deal with cooling parts. 172k not bad. Did you order all your parts?
