Beautiful Disaster

So recently I was reminiscing about a mishap that occurred last year.

Traveling at approximately 40mph, I was turning left through an intersection an oncoming Dodge Dakota ran a red light and hit me nearly head on. He was also doing roughly 40-45mph, so the closing speed was somewhere in the vicinity of 80mph.

When looking at the damage, keep in mind that I walked (hobbled) away from this collision with a broken left foot (2nd and 3rd metatarsals were shattered, 4th metatarsal broke in two places). The only reason my foot broke was because I had the clutch pressed in while downshifting.

The hood and everything piled on top of it was blown off into the intersection. They picked it up, turned the hood upside down (like a bowl) and put all the misc. bits in it and piled it atop the car.

Wow that's terrible. Not to long ago, this new asian female driver driving a ford escape was trying to run a redlight to make a left hand turn and crashed right into me going over 30mph. Luckily I was in my dad's benz and it took all the damage.

Any other car I would be in serious trouble. I walked away perfectly fine. Over 20k in repairs for it. At least your injuries aren't that bad. Good luck though

Damn!

Yeah, my foot still hurts to this day even though it's been over a year. Granted, I didn't help the healing process when I was racing my motorcycle on the gimpy foot.

I replaced that with an e53 X5, then replaced that with an e92 335i.

Is there a positive ending to this story?

Yeah. That you can go head on in an e46 and walk away with little to no injury. Pretty damned impressive at 85mph closing speeds.

It's a subforum for pictures of your e46. I didn't think it prudent to post up my 335i coupe.

It was a helluva n impact. All I really remember was the feeling of the force/shockwave traveling through my body. Well, that and the incredible pain in my foot.

Before the crash I was sold on Bimmers due to their drivability. After the crash I'm sold due to their safety.

Now think of how safe a new Chevy cruze would be! The e46 is an average car by today's standards (safety wise).
New cars have come a long way and are very focused on safety. I wouldn't hesitate to get into most small cars today and crash them.
Glad the e46 saved your life! it must have loved you ver much.

I guess it did. I drove it from 98k miles all the way to 210k. We were very close.

Glad you are okay. I had an accident in my bimmer last year too. After reading your story, I'm glad I wasn't shifting. I had actually just shift it into neutral moments before my collision. The cop kept asking me if I was okay while looking at my poor bimmer. I'm still in pain but I'm hoping it will pass.

+1 all the way. Although depending on when I am looking and cars in my price range, I would consider a current gen C-class by Mercedes. Really love the car when in white. Would come after BMW but before VW and audi

Props to the e46! Every time I see a bad crash like this the driver is almost never hurt.
