Big Jae's M3 build - a street legal track car for HPDEs and drifting

In case you're wondering about the 330 its being parted out and sold. Here's why.

Good news is I've just bought a 2004 M3. IMO, got a steal! The exterior is far from perfect. Door dings, some minor paint issues (some burned clear from polishing I guess), and needs a new bumper. The front input seal on the diff leaks. Otherwise, it runs AWESOME! And the interior is in pretty good shape for a 5 owner car.

The plan is to keep it street legal (mostly) and to use it as a track car for DEs, drifting, maybe some auto-x and maybe time trials. Maybe 3-4 years from now I can make it track only. I'd like the option to drive it to/from the track and places where I need to service it for alignments, etc. I will be sporting large ///Momentum BMW, Bimmer Brakes, and The Driver's Edge logos on the car for the race car look...because RACECAR. But this will actually see the track. Not so much sponsorship, its a way for me to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for helping me to get the car ready.

First, I will knock out the maintenance. Fluid changes, tune up, reinforcements, refresh all of the driveline mounts and suspension bushings.

Second, it will go on a diet. Trunk will be stripped. Front and rear carpets removed, no back seat, rear panels, rear deck, C-pillars, armrest, OE belts, center console (maybe) and headliner (maybe). I will install fixed back seats. I hope to lose about 150 lbs.

Third, suspension, brakes, and tires. I will transfer my TC Kline D/As with 600fr/700rr springs and TMS rear adjustable arms. Buying new Vorshlag camber plates and limiters. I will install PF FCABs...I like how they felt on my 330. Putting in solid rear subframe bushings and Vorshlag poly engine mounts. Not ready to go solid yet...I will when I get a tow vehicle in the distant future. Of course, a 4 wheel Stoptech BBK (355/ST40 all corners)...these things are awesome! Lastly, I will reuse the APEX ARC8 18x10 wheels on my E90 M3 with Nitto NT01s.

Fourth, drivetrain. Definitely going with the UUC SSK + DSSR. The OE shifter feels terrible AND UUC makes an excellent SSK. Had one on my 330, loved it. Then going with 4.10 gears...this makes the car pretty damned quick.

Last, engine. Waiting in the Bimmerbrakes Headers, if he'd ever get off his a$$ and get it done! Then a quieter version of the Bimmerworld exhaust. Might eventually do a carbon CSL style airbox and Alpha-N...not sure if that's worth it.

Whenever I get a tow vehicle and trailer, I'll put a 4pt cage and 6pt harnesses.

Ok, onto the progess...which is very little. Just finished taking the go-fast stuff off of the 330.

First mod

Rear suspension is on...still waiting for my non-M springs to come in so I can take off the front TC Kline struts. Need to raise it.

Anyone need a functioning moonroof? I'll be selling mine soon...

Going in soon...

Thanks to Bimmerbrakes...should be coming soon. The pic is from a different Bimmerbrakes car.

Mmmmm.....

The goal is to get to 3000 lbs with a full tank, no driver. So I Just took out 116 lbs of crap from the B pillars back. I will add 92 in seats, harnesses, and fire extinguisher. Then estimate to remove another 150 in front seats and 50 in other stuff within the interior. I'm keeping the headliner for now. So that will put me at about 225 lbs of weight loss from the interior.

Interior - 225
Headers and exhaust - 50
BBK - 20
Wheels - 40
Air pump - 10
Washer resorvoir and lines - 10
1 horn - 5
Sunroof delete - 35 lbs
Headliner - 10 lbs
OEM alarm - 5 lbs

That puts me at 410lbs. Curb weight is about 3400 lbs. So I should be close to 3000lbs without putting any horrid carbon fiber on my car.

The sunroof delete only netted you -35lbs? I thought it was closer to 70 lbs? Regardless, nice job. I'm excited to see more progress.

If I stay in TX...I will start this spring. Only did one practice. Many people go back to the roots of their culture that's what I'm doing. Asian = drifting.

Jae i'll be copying you and every choice you make just because Asians make good decisions.
Car arrives tomorrow and the stripping starts Sunday. What sunroof blank did you go with?

Just FYI, there is no such thing as a quieter version of the BW exhaust. I have the BW street exhaust with the left diffuser exit which has a larger resonator and it is still ridiculously loud. I need to add a resonator to quiet it down a bit to eliminate the droning. Sounds like the gates of hell is opening at redline though.

Well that really blows....i've been looking to buy that exhaust for weeks now but I just don't think i can live with it for now...more so my neighbors and wife can't.

Maybe, just maybe another resonator would do the trick so i'm looking forward to your experiment. My car doesn't have cats but has the RE rasp pipe.

Sorry for hijacking your thread! BTW my CF sunroof blank just arrived!

Wow, I didnt know you were getting rid of the non-M and had forgotten about your engine woes. Best of luck with this build and I hope you're able to enjoy it for a long time!
