Google Improves Mobile Wallet, Adds A Physical Card to the Mix

Google Wallet has been pretty bland thus far, not offering a whole lot of functionality other than being able to pay with an NFC equipped phone at a paypass equipped merchant, or a quick and easy online checkout procedure similar to what PayPal offers.

Screenshots have surfaced of an up-and-coming upgrade that includes several new abilities (possibly coming to iOS as well).

Better pictures and more info in this article. Since NFC based payments have not been taking off, this looks like a cool way to add convenience to payment processes without requiring an Android, NFC equipped phone. If there's no fee involved (like in Paypal or Square), then the person to person money transfer is something I've been hoping someone would come up with for awhile.

Quote:
Wow. This is a lot to soak up. Wallet's shaping up to be a major contender in the mobile payment world yet again, and we couldn't be more excited. And no, unfortunately, we don't know anything about availability outside of the US.

The other important implication? The physical Wallet card could make carrier approval for Wallet a thing of the past unless you want to use tap payments. Google could publish a version of the Wallet app without NFC permissions that just allows you to switch between your cards, that could be installed on any phone (even iOS or Windows Phone, theoretically), and you just use the Wallet card for payments. That's pretty cool. And could seriously reduce the chance of rival mobile payment systems of catching on. Google really does seem to have thrown a wrench in the works of the likes of ISIS and other competing systems.

Oh please, there are plenty of Apple threads too. Why are we keeping score?

I think it'll be interesting to see if they can become a force in this or if the whole thing will be forgotten in a year or two.

I hope it takes off, because it seems like I'll have a lighter waller (literally) if it does.

Google wallet is not amazing.

But I still think it deserves a thread.

It doesn't say google on it, and it does not run Android.

Nothing? Just improving upon it.

I like the idea of having one card that can act as all of them and being able to disable it for any number of reasons.

I'd say this would be an awesome card for parents to give to their kids. Easy way to monitor and control spending.

considering most of us spend multiple hours a day staring at our mobile devices, I see it totally fit to have threads about androids and iphones.

I like the idea of the wallet being able to contain a balance of its own, especially if i can transfer money to and from it with a friends account instantly, and for free. I almost never carry cash anymore, so this would be an easy way to keep small debts resolved, etc. You know, "hey lets split a case of yuengling, here's $9.52" and the money shows right up in the account. I'm always looking for a way for technology to make my life easier

As opposed to student checking accounts, and how parents can already check the balance and activity wherever they want (apps).

The only other big competition (Isis) is looking pretty weak so far. Somehow, it's only available to be used in 2 cities thus far, and it only supports a few cards. It is backed by 3 of the 4 main carriers though, so maybe it will catch up. I guess Passbook could also be considered a competitor, but I don't think it supports actual payment information, only reward cards, tickets, etc, so it really isn't a complete "wallet."

That as well, I see a lot of great uses for it.

That is one example...sure. But not limited to just student checking accounts or even debit/credit cards.

Oh hey, I got these visa gift cards...screw carrying them all around, throw it all on one card and know the balances.

There are a bunch of uses for it.

I don't want to see anymore android OR iphone threads. They are both completely redundant.

Can we actually bring back the chrome M3? I liked seeing that on every thread better.
