Change stock auto shifter to a steptronic shifter

I have a 1999 323i sedan with auto transmission and I would like to know if I can switch the auto shifter with a steptronic shifter that was available on models 2000 and up.

your car is probably an 02/00 or earlier build with the general motors 5l40e transmission. 03/00 323is and 325/330 models used the ZF5HP19 auto box with steptronic

in short, check your build date, but probably not.

I have heard that people have changed the auto to steptronic in similar situations. What all would have to be changed in order to use steptronic in the car instead of a full auto like I have currently?

I called the dealership and asked the guy that works in the parts department. He told me that it would be possible if I was willing to put in about 4000+ parts and labor plus I would have to do a lot of rewiring he said. How much is true and how much is just hullabaloo is not certain, but I still believe that it would be expensive. He said it would be cheaper but still expensive to take a used step tranny from a 325 and fit it into the 323i
