Went to my first gun show: Impulse bought a Soviet rifle

1933 Mosin-Nagant. I have only shot 10 bullets from a .22 during my entire life. Now I own a high powered rife that can kill a man at 800 yards. I don't know what to do with it, how to shot it, or if I even want it anymore.

Takeaways from the event:
*gun shows scare me now because I realize just how easy it is for anyone to buy a gun. The background check was a joke and I had the gun and box of ammo in my hand before I even filled out the paperwork.
*I didn't know you could buy tasers that big.
*Rednecks will buy anything with USA stamped on it
*The zombie Apocalypse is legitimately a concern for Americans

I made the local news as I was leaving... I'm in the orange rugby shirt walking towards the camera (weapon in tow).

Nice buy! Don't shoot it until you've determined that it's safe to fire. Google for instructions on how to do this or take it to a gun smith.

*Rednecks will buy anything with USA stamped on it They'll buy anything that goes bang or around in a circle only turning left
*The zombie Apocalypse is illegitimately a concern for Americans I'm not worried.

I have 20 rounds. My buddy bought one as well, so we might go shoot them this week for fun.

I didn't know I needed to see if it was safe to shoot. I'll google it, thanks.

The way it should be. Why would you be scared?

Private sales are private sales. No BG check should be required for a Non-FFL transfer

Yes, you do need to make sure it's safe to fire. The last time it was cleaned and fired was probably somewhere on the eastern front during WW2.

Wear a jacket or something padded when you fire it. You'll thank me later for that.

Are there any gun laws you're in favor of? Should anyone be able to buy and carry whatever they want and as much as they want?

Unless they're certified mentally ill or a violent felon etc, then yep.

What constitutes certified mental illness? Are you suggesting that everyone have a mental evaluation before purchasing a gun or are you just confident that the people who are mentally ill have already been identified as such?

Violent felons? How violent? Domestic quarrel? Non-weapons charges?

How about registration? Should we know who owns what? Restrictions on resales?

There's a fairly concrete list of what constitutes a violent crime, as opposed to a non-violent crime. The BJS lists murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault as violent crimes.

Someone like me walked into a gun show and purchased a rifle and then disappeared. I guess I didn't realize that guns didn't come with a title or something like a car.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against people who own/sell guns, but I guess it was just a little overwhelming to see so many people buying weapons and accessories that are pretty much specifically designed to allow them to kill humans. Tactical scopes, silencers, old ladies buying pocket revolvers with no safeties, and gun vendors handing out pistol key chains along with a "don't take this to school now" disclaimers. It's something I had never seen before.

They interviewed me as well, but my pro-guncontrol views didn't fit the theme of little-ol-Aiken's new's center.

My friend was buying a similar rifle for his dad in New York. The seller knew this and said as long as the buyer had a SC address and ID he didn't care where it went as long as he promised to "not give it to a felon."

Seems like a foolproof system

Guns shouldn't be owned by children under 14 unless they've had some sort of gun safety training (I'm adamant about that being part of curricula in public and private schools. Scream away if you must). Older than 14, you should be able to buy, sell, trade, own, display, and carry anything anywhere anytime for any reason. This is how it would be in Boogetyland: There would be a boatload less crime if everyone walked around armed (think about it) (I mean really think about it: Don't just dismiss it as crazy. Think about a world in which everyone was more-than-likely armed, and what that would do to criminals) (someone always pops up at this time and says, "then criminals would shoot to kill first instead of pointing a gun threateningly." But that would be slow suicide: You would inevitably be caught and executed shortly thereafter, so no. It's MAD [Mutually-Assured Destruction] on a local level, instead of a tacit understanding between nations). The opposite is also true: There would be a lot less crime if everyone was unarmed. But they're not, it's too late for that, and therefore, everyone should be able, and encouraged, to carry.

You've obviously never been to a gun show (and many haven't, not judging, just realistic). Brady Bill nonsense notwithstanding, if you have ID, you can probably get anything anywhere anytime at any gun show, with a minimum of waiting...

I can't wait to have my own private island...
