Identifying ZHP Cams?

Anyone know if there is any way to identify a set of ZHP cams? I have a motor that I'm doing a valve cover gasket on and I want to see if it has the performance cams on it already. I can spin the motor and see a bunch of casting marks. Some look like date codes (there is an 02 51 which sounds like the 51st week of 02) and some look like part numbers (1748970 on the exhaust cam).

I believe this motor is a plain jane 2002 330i motor but I want to be sure.

Thanks,

John V

If it's an unmodified motor from 02, it doesn't have ZHP cams. It's possible someone swapped a set in but not very likely. I have an exhaust cam sitting in the garage, I'll see if I can unpack it later and see if there are any distinguishing marks.

It's not an unmodified '02. The entire engine was disassembled and blueprinted back in '04 or '05. Some minor port work was done on the heads, it was bored over .020" and the head was milled.

I guess what I really need is to check the markings on this cam against a set of stock non-ZHP cams. I have a set of ZHP cams in the garage... some of the marks match the cams in this motor but some of them don't.

Can you please photograph and / or write down the various casting numbers on them? Intake and exhaust?

I want to compare them against the two sets of cams I have here.

If you want to just snap photos of what you see and e-mail them to me that would be a huge help. john_vitamvas at yahoo dot com

Don't worry about it. I just verified the motor has ZHP cams in it already.

I guess I have a set of new ones to sell now. Damn.

OK, now I figure you're half way there with your 248 exhaust cam.

Let me know if you want a 264 intake cam to finish things off.

Is 248 exhaust/264 intake a good combo?

Yes, that's the way Schrick Cams sells them for the M54.

I ran that combo for a while & liked it very much, made my Bimmer feel great.

After my motor rebuild I installed the Schrick 264 intake with a 252 exhaust cam, that also feels excellent, the 252 exhaust cam gives a few more HP.

Good luck,
Rob

Rob, ZHP cams in a M52TUB28.
Worth it?
What would be needed besides the cams?

If I'm not mistaken the M52TUB28 uses 228/244 cams (correct me if I'm wrong). So going to a 248/248 would yield some WHP for a lot of work, so for me it wouldn't be worth it. But if I owned a M52TUB28, I'd install 264/252 cams & Supertech upgraded valve springs with Titanium retainers. This would yield great results on either a 2.5L or 2.8L motor, as in it would completely come alive.
