Exclamation 325ci Transmission keeps switching into limp mode..

I own a 2003 325ci with about 100,300mi on it. Just recently I went out to start my car one morning and it would not put any power through the starter at all. I had the starter replaced and that fixed that problem. I've had my car back for about a day now and the transmission switched into limp mode. When I last drove the car it was fine. When I got back in the car and cranked it up the cog light with the exclamation point came on and so did the service engine soon light. I took the car to the mechanic who ran a code reader on it which automatically cleared the limp mode, and then he manually cleared the check engine light. The car drove perfect after that and shifted gears great. The next time the car was started it immediately registered in limp mode. The mechanic mentioned that this also happened after reconnecting the battery once he replaced the starter. The limp mode error code has been cleared once more and the car drove fine, but the next time it was started it went straight back into limp mode, where it currently sits. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Could be signs of tranny failure. Time for a manual swap

I'm hoping its something electrical, b/c the error code didn't occur until the mechanic reconnected my battery the first time after replacing my starter. He said he had to clear the limp mode error code before returning the car to me after replacing the starter. I have never had any transmission problems at all before this and the car drove absolutely perfect each time the error code has been cleared. I will also note that I have been using an aftermarket battery for about the past 8 months.
