Thumbs Up Removed angel eyes and blacked out grills. Premium-size me. You do it too. (pics)

I've been rolling around with blacked out grills and angel eyes for a few months just to try it out...

I just felt the front end felt stuffed and poked. Like I was teasing it with a wooden stick and beating it into submission. Into something it didn't want to be. It looked OK, I suppose, but it lost its class.

So, de-angel eyed and installed new lenses...

and new philips 85122+s complete w/ programming for double-highs + fogs... (sorry no pics of that... just imagine it?)

Removed the ill-fitting, cheesy-plasticked grills and reinstalled the old 10-year old grills which I dissassembled and carefully cleaned (you must disassemble to clean them properly--so much gunk hiding behind the fins...

compared to this...

...I feel like my car got its original soul back. also notice the software-induced corner delete? (only low beams come on)

Yeea happy insides

OK enough pic-whoring.

What say you? Can i get some of you to unblack/unangel eye your cars?

What option did you select to enable high beams + fogs?

It's up to the individual, let them decide for themselves.

I want to say it looked better before, but I can't tell because you got so artsy with your shots.

Look for FL_UND_NSW_NICHT_GLEICHZ and set to nicht_aktiv (it was a long time ago that I did this so I'm 95% sure that's right) If terra sees this, he'll confirm

I disagree, engel eyes should be only on cars that come with them. Why? Because the original BMW angel eyes are of extremely high quality and the aftermarkets dont hold a candle to them.

And yes, obviously these are preferences.

The photos are not artsy. I took them all in the span of 3 minutes and ran back inside the house. lol the lights are clearly visible.

I just turn off the angel eyes.
I don't feel like bring attention to an 12 years old slow car.

So if you had an E39 that came w/ them stock, you'd remove them? Interesting!

Im just messing with you; in the end, we all have individual tastes and preferences. I think everyone should do what they feel like to their own car for whatever reason. As long as it isnt totally tasteless. Otherwise we would all be driving the same looking car lol. Youre going for the nastaglic stock look... thats cool.

Looks great. It's amazing what new lenses can do to rejuvenate the front of a car.

^ True. My old lenses were actually in 8/10 condition and very clear. They just had a lot of tiny pits I couldn't stand looking at. No hazyness or discoloration as some severe ones had. (the pic of the car in the snow was just road grime/rain/crap)

Looks excellent. I've actually been debating on removing my AEs for the past few months. I think this just made up my mind. I'll likely be removing them when I return to San Diego next week. The grill in the other hand is still under consideration.

I do have to say(and this is just my opinion) that on facelifted cars the angel eyes don't look as good because of the shape of the front end. It's different enough from the pre-facelift that for whatever reason angel eyes don't look as great. However, I think that depending on what you're doing with your car the blacked out kidney grills can look great.

Guys with facelifted sedans are lucky as the hood looks more aggressive and the kidney grills are much larger, however, the headlight area doesn't look as aggressive as pre-facelifted sedans. On pre-facelifted sedans the stock kidney grills don't look as great(definitely don't look aggressive) as the facelifted sedans. I think that's why many decided to go with the blacked out kidney grills. At least that's why I did.

Nicely done - looks much better IMO.

I used to like angel eyes when they first came out (installed a set on my last E46 in 2004) - they were new and unique. Guess I got tired of them after all these years....mostly because the new ones are so damn bright, they just look silly.

You're going to be responsible for the decline of angel eyes. Umnitza is going to come looking for you.
