check the maintainence records and get a bmw mechanic to look at it and if it checks out then get it. There's no substitute for a V8.

Nothing seems wrong when talking to the guy but you know people they don't care
I know the m3 is a great car dont get me wrong but the m5 screams power and class at the same time plus i heard the m5s arent as bad maintenence cost wise

most people try and get the 2001 and up since their vanos units were upgraded and better quality pistons/piston rings since the earlier models had oil usage issues. Just make sure this one has major service history.

Imagine what? How many you can find 15grand and under? I hope thats what ur trying to say ...I've had two E46 M3's both with excellent vehicle history/maintenance records and mileage under 90k..for under 15k

They scream power...not class...an E46 M3 is much classier..and the power is substancial...It's preference. If you want an M5 get it. But i got an 03 M3 for 11grand..and didnt regret it for the world....

I'm sorry, but the E39 M5 is probably one of the classiest BMWs ever built. I chose the M3 over it, but specifically because I wanted a car that was a bit "crazier"

Do not buy a 2000.

Buy a 2001 or later.

Engine issues, Nav 16:9, etc.

Been there, done that.

What constitutes "classy" in your opinion? I personally think a car with loads of luxury and/or power while maintaining a sedate appearance fits the bill. So to me, the e39 M5 is the classiest, and the e38 7er is a close second. Most of the BMW enthusiasts I've met tend to agree.

The E46 otoh just looks showier, doesn't have nearly the same fit/finish, screams like a banshee,etc... I love the car, but classy is not the first adjective I'd use to describe it.

Classy to me would be a 7-series. Any "M" series of any BMW's aren't classy to me. "sedate appearance" with the raunchy quad exhaust out the rear?..and trust me ive been in an E39 M5...that screams more than a M3...idk to each their own. I think the 7 series is the classiest of all BMW models...which is why they dont make an "M7" because it would negate that...Just throwing my .02 cents..i just never been a fan of E39 M5's..only the newer chassis...and if i had the 15k..i personally would get another E46..or...an Evo ; ) Gas is $4.60 a gallon where im at...

Where exactly have you "heard" this?

Only e39 m5 you should buy would be a late 2002 or a 2003. The early models were plagued by issues.
