2003 325xi rpm drop at start up
Hi,
I have been noticing the drop of rpm when the car starts. When the car starts first thing in the morning, it seems as it is going to stall and it has done so a couple times. When the weather is nice, it won't stall though. After engine stall/nearly stall, it starts up normally and it does so for the rest of the day. Here is a little video of the rpm meter this morning. At 5 seconds into the video, I let my foot off the pedal and from 6 to 7 seconds, the needle drops quickly from 1K to ~600. It happens again at 18-19 seconds into the vide I hope you can watch the video now )Does anyone have the similar issue? Last edited by boongsin12; 05-12-2012 at 10:19 PM. Reason: video |

Suggest you read the first link below in my signature.
Given the age and mileage, I would consider replacing the DISA, fuel pump & filter and at a minimum the CCV lower oil drain hose and the lower intake boot.

Vacuum leak is what I suspected as well. I replaced both the lower and upper intake boots as well as the DISA valve. The DISA valve plastic holder was broken off so I had to replace the whole unit. I haven't yet taken my time and resources to replace CCV hose for the moment, which will be my next task.
As far as the maintenance goes, I have not yet checked the fuel filter and fuel pump as of now. I have, although, taken off my back seat and fuel tank cover to attempt to take a look at my fuel pump. I was not able to take the rubber hose off. The area circled in red shows the hose connection to the fuel pump, which is PITA to take off. In the process, I have also found out that there is massive amount of rust built up on the fuel pump caps. I don't reckon this is natural. I plan to buy some caps in the future to replace when I replace the fuel pumps. https://plus.google.com/photos/11378...69370171454177 As for the start up problem I am having, I just recorded another video showing the problem better than the previous video. In this video, I first try to turn on the car after being parked over night. The engine stalls at first, so I fire her up once again. The idle RPM is very high for first few seconds. Eventually, it settles down to 600 which seems like a reasonable RPM for my case. I suspect a couple of things, CCV and fuel pump/filter. I don't think vacuum leak is the problem in my case since I do not get any hesitation from the engine when it runs. But I will definitely change out CCV in the near future. Did you ever find a fix?
I have a similar issue, the first start stalls, then the car will start up perfect on the second try. Idle is not rough. Might be time to build that glow plug smoke machine.... I have tried the following: beisan vanos complete cold air CCV new intake boots new fuel pump assy new disa gasket (disa inspected & tested) |
