Prefacelift e46 fan blades gone???

Sister called me this morning said her car was making a knocking noise...01 325i...

I get there and the fan clutch is slapping side to side when running...the fan blades have about 1-2 inches of blade left...they look cut...nothing else is missing ...broken...ect....

What in the hell would rub the blades down like that?

Possible water pump shaft broke and causing the clutch to wobble?

Replace the entire cooling system. See the stickied thread at the top of the section by E46Mango for the reasons why.

Plastics break over time.
Buy a used fan from a junked e46 and put it in. Very easy removal.

Quick and easy fix and stop worrying about other problems.

regarding the blades running down...

Have your motor mounts checked. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this to you yet. Your mounts are probably shot, allowing extraordinary play of the motor under load.

That's very good thinking. . .I probably wouldn't have thought of that at first either.

They look more like they've been wearing against something...but nothing is worn....it's weird...

I doubt they all broke at the sane place...possible but unlikely

You feel inside your fan shroud for nicks?

Also I gotta think if it looses one blade that it starts to really quickly spin erratically. I'm curious as to how long it could go at speed with major trauma to one fan blade, and what is most likely to happen in that scenario. Good thing she didn't have to land in the Hudson.

Change your engine mounts. Happened to my twice.

IF you have the extra cash, get the electric fan and replace the mounts. Then sell the aux fan for $100 or so
