My Ride: BMW M3 2002
Arrow Just bought a 2002 BMW m3, Just a few Questions.

I just found my dream car on eBay, Apline white 2002 BMW m3,manual, and it has a supersprint exhaust, k&n intake, custom seats and chrome rims with a navi and good interior. 144k miles and i got him down to $11,500. Does it seem to good to be true to get it for that low? All the mods could mean he raced it? Is it beat on? What should I replace first? The dealership says its a great car and im flying down next week to drive her home. Im in NJ its in FL... I appreciate any advice because I want to keep this car alive as long as I am.
Thanks Guys

Time for you to get your priorities in order.

Lol, just kidding!

However, it sounds like the guy you're buying it off of probably beat on it a lot judging by those mods.
Especially the K&N intake....WHO would replace an M3 intake with a K&N intake!?!

11500 sounds really low. A lot of people n dealerships are still selling plain 3's for around that price. On ur test drive bring it to a mechanic.

Double check everything...it really does sound too good to be true, but it could just be me, I doubt a lot.

There aren't many 140,000 mileage e46 M3s...so it makes sense that the price is so low. Especially with an S54 motor, they aren't supposed to run that high...

^What makes you say that?? My M3 has 154k on it, still pulls hard. No weird noises or Vanos issues. Most M3's are lower mileage because people baby them or keep them as summer cars. I was lucky enough to find a high mileage well maintained sample and it's been good to me. Mileage doesnt mean anything to these cars so long as they are maintained properly.

You can tell a lot meeting the owner and asking questions about the background of the car -
You won't find a m3 that hasnt been reved a bit - the car was designed for revving and can take it - good luck!

Someone with stupid (I presume) chrome wheels and a K&N intake on an e46 M3 most likely didn't maintain it properly.

I'm aware that any car, any engine, can run for a long time depending on how it's maintained. This just seems like a car that's gonna require a lot of help to me.

True, to be honest, I'd run from any car with chrome wheels, no matter how sweet of a deal it is...

high mileage e46 m3s go for anywhere between 11k-14k depending on the condition. give him 11k cash and enjoy the car

Honestly, 11.5k doesn't sound too bad. I paid 12.5k for my 03 w/152k on it. Although mine was loaded, Navigation, PDC, Cinnamon Leather, HK, Xenons, OEM 19's, Memory/Heat/Elec. Bolster seats w/ lumbar. If a PPI checks out I say buy it, or at the very least use it to negotiate him down even further.

Dumbest thing I've read all day.

OP: When you receive the car be sure to get it thoroughly inspected. Do all required services that aren't documented in its history. Pray for no subframe issues. I hope you got lucky and picked up a gem. Treat her right and be diligent on maintenance and there's no reason why it can't give you more than your money's worth.

I agree with most of the things you have to say, but this I can't agree with. The S54 isn't designed to fail any sooner than an M54, M52, etc. It simply requires more maintenance due to the fact that it is a high performing engine.

Actually, I have no experience around an S54. I've never even seen one in person. I'm just going off on what I read over at Bimmerforums a while back.

I figured it made sense since people would love to push that motor.

I've seen boosted M3's with 150k+ plus on them with zero issues. Not to long ago there was a thread on M3forum about a LSB coupe that sold at auction with something like 260k on the original motor. I drove my last E46 past the 200k mark, and I don't anticipate any major issues doing the same with my ///M.

EDIT: It was 318k miles... http://www.autobidmaster.com/carfind...HINA_GROVE_NC/

Understandable. When you take into account the added maintenance the S54 (and the rest of the M3) requires, such as valve adjustments and more individually expensive parts, a lot of people get turned off but I think it all makes sense, I mean it is an M, after all.
