Steptronic Sport to Auto mode problem

Hi guys.... reposting to General from Driveline hopefully for a wider audience and some advice.

Need some help with my steptronic shifter.

The shifter will move to into Drive and into sport mode no problem. I can use it manual mode and again, no problem.

The problem occurs when moving the shifter back from sport to auto mode. The movement is not smooth and if feels as though the shifter is catching. In order to move back into auto mode, I need to jiggle the shifter back and forth a little for it to move across completely.

I removed some of the trim for a peek at the shifter mechanism and it looks like there is a broken grommet or bush - not sure what to call it.

This picture shows what it should look like (taken from the "DIY: Auto <---> 5 Speed Swap Lots of Pixs!!!" thread by Ivegotissuess666:

In the red circle you can see where there is a broken piece.

Any ideas on fixing this will be very greatly appreciated. The shifter mechanism is a non-serviceable item on realoem so no help there.

Cheers

Thanks Jason. I'll try for a better picture tonight when I get home.

From what it looks like, the white "grommet" should sit inside the brass ring and smoothen the movement from auto to sport and back by ensuring that the brass ring engages correctly.

^ haha! Not yet.... I am sure it's easily fixable even though I would love a manual. Had a 325Ci 5MT in a pre-face for a while, lots of fun to drive and much more satisfying than the steptronic. The rest of the family needs an auto...
