Finally got around to put in my C&R radiator.... It's an excellent thermal battery upgrade with increased capacity.... Temps after running through the gears and over xxxmph sustained load in 6th stayed at 85c and quickly came back to 70c prior to this upgrade the temps were 95 in similar conditions but with heater on in car and took a while to come down to base temp of 80... This is with Motorsport thermostat in both scenarios.

Got a great gift... Fellow enthusiast who loves turbo M3s voluntarily offered to detail my car... He did a great job buffing out some of the faded carbon fibre too, like new....

They have some interesting tools but I haven't used them. I currently use a combination of Xdf , BDM and hex to modify DME

Well I've been waiting to see how long my HPF stage 2 clutch would last with all the increased power. Today It started slipping in high boost with 50/50 around 4000 rpm just after peak boost...

I also have oil consumption about a 1 liter every 1000km ... Which bothers the crap out of me... My compression is 130-135 and I think I have a combination of valve seal and rings that r getting loose at least the oil rings as compression is reasonable. I have about 60,000km on motor since build.

I'm going to pull the motor and SMG trans. Ill re hone and ring , do the bearings and strap on my ported head I've been working on in the back ground. I'll do this over the next several months. I will look for about 825-850 out of this bad boy.

In the meantime I purchased a used s54 with 90,000km on it... I'll be doing an experiment and put a thicker MLS head gasket lowing compression to 10:5:1 with L19 head studs , replace rod bearings with WPC treated units / rod bolts and install with my manual trans conversion. I'll be also be putting a stage 4 southbend clutch to handle things.

With this motor I'll also be installing infinity 10 and tuning for 94 octane pump (guessing 550-575 wheel ) and with 50/50 I'm going to push this motor a bit to get 650-675 wheel and stop at that point for reliability as I think that's about all that the stock rods and pistons could take.

I'll open a new thread documenting the journey with results etc... I'm thinking ill be done in the next 4 weeks give or take a few given my schedule and arrival of a few needed parts...

----- update----

valve seals r confirmed toast so I'll put the spare motor to the side for now and just do the head on my built motor. 160km on seals.

Pulled the plugs after some runs before I do the swap... Plugs look nice and tanned which is really good and car has great power and drivability.

I did a leak down test to see where things were at before I made some big decisions about what I was doing next.

Symptom is puff of smoke on deceleration and 1 litre of oil every 600 to 800miles.

Test was done at between 60 and 42c which was a below operating temp ( I have Motorsport thermostat with big radiator and it's cool out today so that's all I was going to get and my insurance ran out)

Compression was 130-135 on all cylinders and cylinders 1 through 4 were 8.5 percent and 5 & 6 were 6.5 percent. Well within spec which tells me the motor is good and that my valve seals need replacing which I'm going to do either before my SMG to manual conversion or after.

Ran scope down throttles to see if oil had been running down intake valves... Sure looks like recent oil stains to me... especially if fuel is constantly cleaning them.... So another piece of data confirming valve seals as leaking... I'm thinking of just swapping out the head for my spare I'll send out to have rebuilt.

Playing the other side....what if you put the new head on, and you still have the consumption problem?

Is there anything else you can think of checking?

Exactly..... That's why I've tried everything I know to make sure.... Imo all evidence leads to seals... The leak down and oil on intakes combined with the symptoms r very convincing. Worse case If I swap the head and it still does it then unfortunately I'll have to pull the motor and do the rings...

Is there any oil in the intake manifold or intercooler?

Just trying to rule out variables....I hate re-doing stuff. (Unfortunately, I seem to do a lot of that)

I just sat the cam timing tool on there while I was checking a few things out with the cam test fitting before I tore it down to be machined

Once that I verify all is good I will remove trans in the car and install. Looking forward to driving a manual again should really make the car a different experience. It's also the ground work that needs to happen to run the infinity.
