S54 head on a M54?

Is this a direct fit? The M3 makes 100 more hp and I would think at least half of that is in the cylinder head. I realize I'd have to get it retuned also. Is it worth it or would a port and polish and a set of schricks do just as well?

If this was a direct plug and play swap to the M54 to get an extra 50hp, I guarantee you there would be a hell of of a lot of people who have done it already. Judging by the fact that there aren't any (that I know of) who have done it, I'm guessing it's either too complicated, too expensive, or impossible.

Cool. I wasn't sure. I was thinking a S54 was just a bored and better flowing version of the M54. I thought maybe they were interchangeable like a Chevy 350, 327 and 305.

True, but I also wouldn't think there are to many M3 owners parting out their engines. I'm sure a brand new one from BMW isn't very economical either.

If you want the equivalent of 50hp, do the following

Headers
Cams
Tune and CAI
3.38 or 3.46 differential

I have an AA supercharged 330ci with sport pckg with all of the above plus much more. Minus the cams. I have a Koala 3.46 lsd.

There are several people who have done S54 (entire engine) swaps. These are usually wrecked or otherwise non-functioning donor cars. The same would apply to heads. You can find ones that have bad rod bearings or bad piston rings being parted out.

How well do M54 heads flow? Is it worth a port and polish or are they legit from the factory?

There are only a handful of people on this forum that can actually answer this question. I suggest sending it to Adam (PEI330) on here. He will know for sure. I dont think the coolant/oil passages line up.

Some people have dumped tons of money into the M54 to see how far they can develop it, and have gotten very far. In the end, they could have had more power for less money by just buying a used and completely stock S54.

My 330 already beats stock M3's and I don't have nearly as much into it as it would have cost me to buy a stock M3. It would take almost $10k more before I got to that point. A port and polish will only cost me the price of new gaskets.

With FI, there is room for significant improvement especially with the exhaust ports. ESS strongly encourages people to enlarge the exhaust ports by 8-10 mm (in width) when installing their TS3 SC'er kit. I'm sure NA applications would see some gains if both intake and exhaust ports were addressed. Can't tell you what kind of numbers to expect from head work alone or if it's really worth the effort and expense.

However, the previous owner would have been better off buying a M3. He dumped $25k into this 330ci. As for me, his loss is my gain

I don't think it's possible (from a simple bolt on perspective). Why bother when you can just drop the entire S54 in your car and you won't have a hybrid M54 bottom and S54 top frankenstein

You ruined it.

I was really looking forward to someone bolting the head down then finding out that the valves hit the cylinder bore, the cooling system is different, the VANOS requires a high pressure oil supply, and that Batman is Bruce Wayne.
