Maui vs Kauai

Heading to Hawaii on Sunday for a last minute trip. My wife has to be there Monday morning for a meeting, and again Friday morning, and we can hang out in between.

Her meetings are in Honolulu, so we're staying there Sunday night, Thursday night, and Friday night (we fly back Saturday the 9th). However, her meeting is super early Monday morning (7am-9am), and we're thinking about hopping an intra-island flight and hitting up a resort for three nights.

Top choices seem to be Kauai and Maui, and resorts would be either the Grand Hyatt, Sheraton, Westin, or St. Regis. I probably won't do the St Regis, as the other resorts will already be nice enough, and I don't want to blow that many SPG points.

Anyone been to either island? Stayed at any of those resorts?

Maui. Stayed at the Shearton and Westin. Loved both places. Can't go wrong with either one.

I'm headed to Maui myself this Friday. It's a little more commercialized so there's more things to do, though I love Kauai as well. Kauai is much more laid back and the island itself is more beautiful. So it depends what you want do for your three days. If you want to be out and about; Maui or if you want to sit back and relax; Kauai. I've been to both islands multiple times, but I'm not familiar with those resorts so i can't help you there =/.

I'd personally stick to oahu, but I'm biased my family is from there...but Maui if you really wanted to get to a different island. As one stated above its more commercialized and has a little more to do....but I find Honolulu my home and my paradise

I'm interested in this, because, technically, the easiest thing to do would be to stay on Oahu.

However, knowing very little about Hawaii going in, it seems Oahu is limited as far as resorts. Specifically, you have Honolulu/Waikiki, a few things on the North Share (Turtle Bay), and a few things in the SouthWest (new Disney resort, new Marriott).

We're constantly around big cities (lived in NYC for 2 years, and I still travel there several times a month), and are more into nature, beautiful trees/views/hikes/water, snorkeling, diving, etc, than shopping or nightlife.

Plus, I'm seeing way better deals at the nice resorts on Maui and Kauai than the few resorts I listed above on Oahu.

Excellent. People are getting the Sheraton for $118 a night on Priceline right now. Great deal! I'm leaning towards going that route.

Just got back from Maui (been there three times). It's nice, and there's always something to do, but if you're relaxing I'd highly recommend Kauai.

If you do end up on Maui, stay in Wailea. Lahina or Kaanapali are way too busy.

I've heard that Kauai is better. IDK though, I haven't been. Have fun!

can't go wrong. I loved them both but I liked my hotel better in Maui. I would not want to tell you one way or another just because of a hotel, though

Then Kauai is where you want to go. Trust me.

Waimea Canyon is right up your alley.

+10 on Kauai. Grand Hyatt is great (I can't compare to others, but I know the Grand Hyatt and it will not disappoint).

Best hiking. Best waterfalls. Best beaches (north shore). Just get ready to see more chickens than you thought possible. Seriously. Chickens everywhere. But they are laid back chickens.

Hanalei Bay is where you want to be. Kauai is about as relaxing as it gets.

For some reason you also see the most fat people on Maui too. Don't know why.

Kauai is my favorite island. Napali coast and ishihara fish market for the best butter fish plate lunch.

Been to Oahu and Maui, Maui is a popular island, can be really busy at times. I went in February and it wasn't too bad. It can be relaxing it you want it to be.
