On a related note: I just got approached by a headhunter for a Sacramento-area firm that wants to bring on a new partner to head up their trusts and estates department. We have a conference call tomorrow. I'm ambivalent.
I had someone offer to hire me at my conference last week. Feels good

It would have to be a pretty good offer to make me forego the level of personal freedom I have grown accustomed to. I formed a partnership with a couple of guys a few years ago--it was an unmitigated disaster.

I was flattered as hell, but I don't know much more than their basic requirements. I'm assuming they reached out to me because I'm a certified specialist--there are a relative handful of us in the area.

But I don't know if I'm ready to hand over my checks to a communal partnership pot again. That just about ruined me a few years ago. I'm still suffering ill financial effects from that debacle.

Eh, every partnership is a bit different. A lot of the old-school partnerships require you to buy your share, then sign a buy-sell that will require you to buy your older partners' shares when they retire. As long as you can keep the firm going and growing, you then bring on junior partners to buy you out at some point.

As long as you're not the guy at the end holding the bag, I guess that would be okay. The problem is that so many law firms fall apart after a few years. There's no way I would pay a dime for a partnership in a firm at this point. I have a pretty solid history and book of business so that would be the equity I'd bring to the table.

It's totally a pyramid scheme.

Never say never as far as your career goes. I have repeatedly said that I would never be in a partnership again...but we'll see how the phone call goes later today. It may turn out to be nothing.

Business casual today.......tan POW check pants from BR, light blue polo from J Crew, freshly polished Strands and argyle socks.

As much as I like wearing suits and ties, it feels good to wear biz casual stuff.

You joke about it, but what differentiates a pyramid scheme from a legitimate failed enterprise? Is it purely intent?
