Shiny is the enemy. If there's a design, it should be woven in. And no satin.

For a wedding, if you're in any decent shape or look good in general in suits let your personality shine and not your tie I like the KISS motto as my professor would say, "Keep it simple stupid" but like dwass said patterns are good especially for solid suits just nothing shiney.

My bb order (minus one pair of boots) arrived a day EARLY
Fedex came right before I left the house
Was only able to take a quick look before rushing out
The boots look nice

In the next step of my interest in shoes, I am heavily considering trying my hand at leatherwork and making a pair of moccasins/boat shoes.

From a kit/pattern, or just cut from a sheet of leather? Good luck!

Do you have any experience working with leather?

That's part of what I'm looking into. Most of the patterns available are Native American style, which is not what I'm looking for.

I'm thinking of trying my hand with some simple things first (like sewing a leather pillow, belt, simple wallet), then trying my own pattern for a pair of slippers, and finally trying a pair of boat shoes. I've found most of the materials and it seems I could theoretically make a pair of crepe-soled boat shoes for about $60...assuming I don't screw it up.

The biggest issue is the pattern and making sure the shoes don't look like they're from a Dali painting.

Very simple stuff in Boy Scouts and with my dad.

These are the slippers I'd like to try as my first shoe.

Cool. Go for it if you think you'd enjoy it. I doubt you'll save any money, though. Once you factor in the cost of tools and finishing dyes, etc., you'll probably break even with the cost of buying a pair of boat shoes.

I did some leatherwork back in the Boy Scouts as well. I made a couple of belts as an adult, but those don't require much (read: "any") skill.

I've found some sources that have interesting, seemingly high-quality leather (not Horween but still good stuff) for not much. It's basically the leftovers from other companies' operations, so there wouldn't be any cost with dying or refinishing the leather. Also, my labor is not subject to a collective bargaining agreement

That said, I'm sure I will quickly find out that this stuff is even more difficult than I currently understand. BUT, if it turns out well, having summer shoes that I made (along with 100% matching belts!) will be pretty neat.

just don't feel like it. lately i've been in such a jeans and sportcoat mode that the idea of a full suit and dress shirt and tie seems obnoxious. i guess after not engaging in that presentation long enough, i start to think "who does business like this?"

It's always weird when I head to downtown Sacramento to file something with the Secretary of State or the court. Everyone's in a full suit down at the Capitol.

yes yes. i know. i know i am wrong. maybe i just need to treat myself to a new suit to motivate myself for such instances. i do feel like i need to start setting up my wardrobe "for life." like my shoe collection. nothing in my shoe collection will every be out of style or irreparable. i feel like i need to start honing this approach to clothes.
