Conversion

Hello I am now buying all the parts for a zf 5 speed conversion in my e46 m3 SMG. Placing my order for all the bimmerworld kit parts. I have one question would I have to do any software changes?

Umm... yeah? Even if you need a new transmission because yours is blown, why not a 6 speed?

You will need software changes. This thread outlines the basics:

What is this 5 speed conversion ? Will you have to buy a whole new transmission rather then converting your SMG to manual ? Seems crazy. Also my e36 m had 5 gears obviously and that felt like it could use a 6th on the expressway. Can't imagine running my e46 on 5 gears

Edit. Nvm. I just looked it up. Its a race setup. Is that why you are doing the swap ?

Yeah and also going from smg to 6 speed with the same trans you would have to take it to a machine shop.

Taken from bimmerworld:

The factory Getrag 420 in the E46 M3 has undersized synchros and is about 25-30 pounds overweight. Swap in a bulletproof ZF 5-speed, available separately from a variety of donor cars (including E36 M3/328, E46 328/330, etc).

You will need each of these parts, as well as the correct clutch disc for your clutch/flywheel combination (ask your salesman for help to convert an existing performance clutch).

NOTE: The Shifter Carrier Bearing and Shifter Carrier are not needed for BimmerWorld Solid Race Shifter applications.

Driveshaft is sold on a core basis - $400 core charge will be added at processing

This is really only relevant for a 100% track car. The weight is at the very bottom and center of the car

Also, this thread just popped up on first page of m3f coincidentally, covers most of the process.
