LMS: Virus fixing

Hey y'all,

Normally I'm pretty good at getting viruses fixed, but my mom got a doozey on her laptop. As soon as the bios screen goes away, all I get is a cursor in the upper left. Windows doesn't even try to boot so I can't get into safe mode. It's an eMachines e525, and there's no recovery partition, just CD's that she lost... I can order new ones and change the boot order to the cd's, but I'd like to see if I can save this install. The hard drive appears to be fine because I took it out of the computer and can get to the files on it just fine.

Any ideas of what to do? I'm scanning that drive for viruses right now, but I imagine something in that registry is f-ed up, and CCleaner can't point to a different registry as far as I know.

Help is appreciated!

Edit, there does appear to be a recovery partition? It's only 100mb, 24mb used, labelled system reserve. No idea.

It sounds like the virus screwed the Master Boot Record. Unless you have somebody that knows what they are doing and has the ability to pull your HD and rewrite the boot record from his machine you need a reformat, or she deleted system.32.

It could be booting and explorer not starting.

Try Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to task manager. IF you get that far, go to new process/task and type explorer

Also, when booting, tap F8 to try and get into Safe Mode or Last Known Good

Have you tried turning it off, then turning it back on again?

That's pretty much where I'm at. I had her order the recovery discs. The virus scan came up with 20 objects, so even if I get it booted, the thing is going to be a train wreck. I'll just pull her docs off and start fresh.

Ok, let me ask you a question. I need you to get up and check to see if the computer is plugged in.

It is?

I must now refer your problem to a higher service level.
