OK. WTF stinks when I turn off A/C?

HELP. Sometimes when I am using the A/C, and then I switch to just using the fan, funky/stinky air starts to come out of the vents. I then turn my A/C back on, and the stank goes away. Then off, and it's back. WTF could be causing this issue? It's got me stumped thus far.

Common problem. "a/c smell" or something like that.

The E46 has a small tray in the bottom of the dash that collects water (bad design) while the AC is running. You turn it off and leave your car.. it warms up, mold grows.. and you are effed. Pretty easy to get rid of though. There are a few writeups. I myself sprayed lysol into the intake of the air system (under the hood) with the fan on high, then sealed up my car for the weekend with a Ionic Breeze inside. Problem gone Just remember to turn your A/C off a minute or two before you get to your destination, so all that moisture can get blown out of there.

I turn the a/c off and then let the heater run for 2 minutes or so at the highest temp setting. That dries out the hvac ducts and evaporator, and it cools the engine down, too!!

Result - no stinko!

This isnt the A/C mold smell-- The panel air smell in all cars ive owned smells like warm antifreeze, its a weird sweet/nasty smell. I dont know why, might be heater core vapors or something? but. you dont smell it with warm heater air very often

UPDATE:
I just replaced the cabin air filter and the funky smell has diminished quite a bit.

It was kind of odd to me how if I was using the A/C, there was no funk, but right when I turn the A/C off, then there came the funk.

Febreze that filter. Works quite well.

The problem is build up of bacteria from the air in you vent system.
You should get an antibacterial vapour spray for the car which you spray into the vents on your hood whilst the system is at full blast.

10 mins later no more smell!!
Hope that helps
