Paging all my NY people. Want to devote this thread for affordable good food found throughout NYC. There are enough threads/posts in the food section with high end eateries.

When you're in NYC you have to eat a good knish. Best Knish spot in NYC imo is Yonah Shimmels Knish bakery on the lower east side. Been in the same location since 1910 and has a variety of different knish's on the menu. Im a purist so I highly recommend a standard knish with some mustard. If you're into mob history, the owner actually got arrested collecting his loan shark payments at this very location

Want to pay my respect to one of the best Doner (gyro for you amateurs) spots in NYC. Recently had to close its door's since the buildings new owner would not renew their lease. This place was one of the first Turkish doner spots in NYC, and got really famous after it appeared in the movie Coyote Ugly. Rumor has that they are in the process of getting a new location on the same block. I hope they come back.

Bereket Kebab, Lower east side.

VIPizza in Bayside Queens - Best sicilian pizza in NY.

Halal carts are subjective, some of my favorite carts aren't halal (arab) but greek.

Greek Nick on Roosevelt ave right by the church has some of the best chicken kebabs ever...on a hero with bbq and hot sauce, to die for.

Jewish delis are a NY staple for those that love that sh!t, I personally hate it. The 4lbs of meat on two thin crackers is fvcking stupid. Not for me.

Blue Ribbon (not sushi) is an awesome place to grab a bite late night, IF you have some money, and can wait ($$$$). Place was made for chefs to come eat after work, so it's open late, packed, and has a crazy menu, from escargot to fried chicken...sh!t that chefs want after work.

Great cheap italian place.....

Great food, fresh pasta made by hand by one guy. Awesome place for a cheap date or a side chick
I've always been a fan of this place, this guy does things the right way, and charges the right amount, and sh!ts all over the fake expensive celebrity italian joints, like Babbo.

If I think of more, I'll post em up.

One of the latest food phenomenons is halal carts, they've been around for close to 30 years but as of recently they've been getting more popular with regular Americans. Most popular is The Halal Guy's that recently opened up a spot on the west coast as well. I have no problem with the Halal Guys, its good food and I respect them for being pioneer's in making halal carts popular, but they are hardly the best. Most Halal carts serve "Americanized" versions of middle eastern food's and the Halal Guys are essentially the McDonald of the Halal food game. I crave the Halal Guys like a crave a Big Mac. I recently discovered Adel's Famous Halal Food Cart (49th and 6th). The food is bangin. They actually have 2 choices for rice, the regular and the spicy. The spicy rice is BANGIN, a lot of flavor and actually cooked right. My biggest beef with most halal carts is that they slack on the rice and veg. Adel's Halal Cart got it right. Do yourself a favor and ORDER THE SPICY RICE, and there veg is actually fresh.

NFR, I 100% agree with you on the kosher jewish deli's. Katz Deli wants $20 for a pastrami sandwich which I honestly dont even think its that good.

Also a big +1 on the Halal carts being subjective, but with so much attention being paid on them the guys with the best halal food are starting to get recognized.

I was shooting an event at Carnegie Hall recently and was starving. This dude was the only one that was open, food was good because he just made it and I got the fresh stuff not the sitting on the grill dying half the day stuff. The only thing worth visiting NY for is food.

Im starting to notice most guys are cleaning up their act. Not leaving food on the grill and making most stuff to order. Maybe the arabs are learning a lesson (finally)

The halal guys recently franchised and they've opened up restaurants in socal now. Personally, Mamoun's shawarma in the West Village is my favorite when it comes to middle eastern food.

In the shalom dept, I love me some Russ & Daughters. It's literally the first place I'd go for a shopping spree if I ever won the lotto For Jewish delis, it pains me to say it, but Harold's in Edison, NJ is the best I've ever had.

And pizza: an L&B slice at Spumoni Gardens.
