Any Kendrick Lamar fans?

I agree b**** don't kill my vibe is a terrible song. I'd love to think the king of hip hop / rap is still eminem and his crew slaughterhouse , probably the best assembled group of lyrical talent that "the rap game" has to offer. In my opinion

We all listen with different ears. Thanks goodness for choice. I wouldn't want to hear him cackling through my car speakers on a daily. I'd rather listen to Sarah McLachlan.

Trust me, he's the next big thing.

If Kanye and Eminem want(is touring) to tour with him, that should speak for itself.

I think it's more about Em and Dre promoting him than anything else. Even with that said, I'm just not personally feelin' him. Obviously he has a fan base and he's not bad, I just wouldn't cop his joints.

I like Kendrick Lamar but I think his ego is going to be at Kanye levels soon

obviously, it's a little early to tell how his career's going to pan out, but if his future releases are anything like what he's been doing so far, he could go down as one of the best rappers ever imo.

lol no way man. Kanye is cocky because of who he is, not because of how good he is. Completely different situations.

basically, the way i feel about it is: k-dot makes the type of music that hip hop sorely needs; music with substance. a lot of hip hop fans aren't young anymore; we've grown up and matured a lot and we can appreciate music that actually says something. that's the difference, imo between jay-z and nas. jigga's ran outa sh1t to say three albums ago; he's devoting entire songs to gibberish with titles like "tom ford." nas has shed the whole mafioso thing and makes music with substance that still sounds good (his last album covered themes like raising a daughter and going through a divorce with kelis). kendrick falls into the nas camp, and he does it with style.

agreed. Hip hip was very very bad for a while. Aside from the big names no new guys came a long and impressed me. I love it now.

Dre has been working with him a couple years. He's promoting his product, but he did the same with Em. You'll jump on the wagon eventually.

I wish I could agree with you, but I'll have to disagree. I liked Em from the beginning. I never liked Kendrick.

Could be his voice....his delivery.....how he strings his rhymes together.........I'm not sure. I just don't get that, "Damn! Those bars he just spit were sick." type of feeling when I hear him. What would you consider to be the qualities of a good rapper?

Now when I hear Yak spit, for example, that's when I find myself saying, "Damn! Those bars he just spit were serious gems!"

Hip hop, at least where the underground is concerned, hasn't really been bad (..there is loads of talent that you won't hear on your local radio station, and you have to be immersed in that culture to be made aware of the gems).....

.....mainstream rap on the other hand........HAS!

this is punchline rap, and kendrick lamar's music shouldn't be listened to using the same metrics of evaluation. the former is a collection of hot lines; kendrick's music is largely a collection of hot verses. i'm not saying one is better than the other, but i'm saying that listening to most of kendrick lamar's music requires attention to the overall theme and narrative of the song, and not the number and level of witty one-liners

I agree with the assessment (..punchline vs theme). It was merely an example of what fuels my fire, but KL's "hottest" tracks aren't themed. I'd label them in the punchline/battle rap category. Even still, if I don't use punchline rap as a juxtaposition, Kendrick still doesn't do it for me. I can't really recall a verse from KL that I'd consider hot. That's just me though........and I've given the guy plenty of hard listens. I'll use "Control" for instance. To me, his verse was average. Not bad....but not fire! Calling out other rappers was what lit up the industry. I'd much rather listen to Cage or J-Zone.....or Black Milk (..he's dope!) or even the up-and-comer Joey Bada$$.
