Epic Motorsports/Bimmerworld tune

Well,
Some of you may be interested to know that I've taken the plunge and purchased a tune that has not been documented on our cars as far as I can tell.

Epic Motorsports/Bimmerworld have started to offer a non-M tune that is flashed by the user via laptop.

I had ordered a shark tune from Bimmerworld but they are back ordered and so I asked about the possibility of switching the order to the Epic tune that they offer. The tune is supposed to be customized for your given combo to some extent and the tuner will gladly take into account previous dynos with a/f ratios etc to help dial in a closer "off the shelf" tune. Bimmerworld states that the tune will be different on each engine and because of this they do not advertise numbers with the tune. However, when pressed, they did say that the tune has made more than the shark in their experience. However, Epic tunes have been well documented to make big numbers on N/A e46 M3's. Given this, they do seem to know what they are doing.

Sounds an awful lot like the Active Autowerke fiasco huh? well we will see.
I will be dynoing before the tune and after and we'll see if this new kid on the block is the best tune for our cars.

The tunes are more race oriented and so am I. So given that, I'm much more interested in improvements in the area under the curve and no so much with peak numbers.

I will update this thread and my M52TU N/A mods thread with my baseline dyno and then with the final tuned dyno when I have it.

Very cool! Great to see that Epic/BW are expanding their tune offerings.

Randy at Epic Motorsports is incredibly good at what he does. Keep us posted on your results!

If the gains are better than shark for M52tu then I'd say its a safe bet for M54. They are very similar motors, though different ECU's

Jared are you still currently running the EuroII software ?? Do you know if this is a generic tune for our motors or will they change it according to our mods ?? Does this tune monitor the post cat o2 sensors ??

PS the throttle body adapter I got from you worked amazing !

The tune is supposed to be specific and personalized for your mods.
They the files of the tune you are currently running (you send them your current tune), so I would assume if your tune monitors post cat O2 sensors, then it would be the same after the Epic tune.

I am still running the Euro 2 tune and will likely have them tune based on it, therefore my version will not have post cat 02's.

I'm glad the spacer is working well for you dopey!

Well I got the baseline dyno done today, and I'm pretty disappointed.
I dyno'd at 188 horsepower last october and my best pull today was 188 again. Since October I've done power pullies and replaced badly worn out spark plugs and a very clogged fuel filter. The car has felt better after each one of those improvements. I can only hope that after the tune my car will improve.

I'm gonna be optimistic and put it down to the extreme heat difference today vs last october. The car does feel faster than it did last year. However it was running rich for almost every pull today.

The first picture is todays dyno pulls with A/F that I will be sending to BimmerWorld/Epic to consider during my tune.

Conditions: 89.73 F, 29.40 inHg, Humidity 12%, SAE 1.01 (My weather station says humidity is 35% today so that could have been part of the problem)

The second picture is my pull from back in October when conditions were:
69.69 F, 28.7 inHg, Humidity 50%, SAE 1.03

Thanks for sharing the results. Randy at Epic will definitely take care of you!

Did you do any runs beyond Run 3?

From my experience, most of the BMWs, mainly M cars, take many many runs to finally find a consistent dyno run. There have been times in my E46 M3 where there has been a staggering 10-15whp difference between Run 1 and Runs 5, 6, 7, 8, 9! Same with the E90 M3. It takes a lot of runs to get these cars to reach proper temps, stabilized IATs, and of course power measurements.

What I typically do, I ask my dyno operator to keep doing runs until my car starts to pull back on power. After that run, I let the motor rest for a few minutes, and repeat again, until I get consistent.

I only did three runs, I'll definitely have to try getting more runs next time around.
