E46 M3 Convertible vs. 335i Sedan, who would win in a straight line?
I have an E46 M3 Convertible 03' and my friend has 335i Sedan 08' and he keep s telling me that he can beat me in a straight line. I told him higher speeds I can take him. So we're going to the track and we're betting on it. What do you think the results will be? Both cars are automatic, (SMG for me). Should i keep going with this race? It's going to be a straight line

335i hands down will destroy you. stock for stock. even an m3 coupe would have trouble

Though I think it would still be interesting to race him yourself. I know you have a vert, but based on this video, who ever wins might be determined on who has the better transmission/ driving skills.

Who cares if the 335 wins.... We all know that E46's were the best BMW's ever made!

335
M3 Coupe vs 335 sedan/coupe would be more fair - only if both are stock however. And whoever drove that m3 in he edmunds test sucks at driving... 5.4s 0-60, really? This car can do sub 5s pretty easily. We also don't know what kind of maintenance issues it had... Maybe needed new shocks? Last edited by TerraPhantm; 07-04-2012 at 10:14 AM. |

If you understand how to use the launch control on the Smg you should take him.
Plus his automatic is an automatic. Yours isn't, so your shifts should be quicker by quite a bit

thanks guys, yeah the fact that i have a vert scares me, but ///m power
![]() I've seen countless videos of the race between 335 and e46 and the 335 always takes it from the launch, but eventually the e46 quickly catches up. I'm hoping for a similar situation. i have 56k miles and he has 30k i think |

Let a lot of air out of his tires. More friction slowing him down.
Also offer to fill up his car before the race. Put in 87. Fill his trunk with taco meat. Real tip: run 1/4 tank or lower. This will save big time on weight. Good strategy for a short race.

numbers wise their 0-60 and 1/4 mile are about the same.
think it would be decided by tires, launch and driver |

335i will win, sorry but you have drag with that convertible top and the sedan doesnt, which at high speeds will hurt you even more, just hope he didnt plug in a jb4 before the race or youll be dealing with a 450+ hp beast
but stock for stock the 335i will pull a little.

To even things out he needs to have 2 grown men in the car. Otherwise that extra 350 pounds the vert has it not going to help at all.

I'm almost positive the 6speed auto in the 335i shifts faster than an SMG. It's negligible really.
also that edmunds video is as old as dinosaurs lol
