trials and tribulations of the 2004 325xi clutch

these issues only apply to the clutch setup for the 2004 model year.
pretty sure I have the story correct, if not all the details; it's very important to know the MONTH your car was built!
cars UP TO september 03 are DIFFERENT than cars built after that. mine is a november build.

they have different clutches. the later cars have the higher spline count on the trans input.
the throwout bearing tube is a different part number as well. I believe the length of the tube is different.
I discovered all of this by accident while doing my clutch for the second time. Gareth at FCP was able to sort through the issues and get me a cobbled together Valeo solid flywheel conversion kit that uses the clutch for the later car but an earlier flywheel (since the standard Valeo kit does NOT work on the later 2004, but they don't tell you that).
doing a clutch in an xi is enough of a nightmare, so make sure you get the correct parts!

well, my clutch installation is complete! thanks to Gareth at FCP, I now have a non-DMF, non-SAC, non-CDV 325xi!

everything is just peachy!

you can look up all the parts on FCP except the Valeo clutch kit, you'd have to ask them what to do about that.
