The BMW gods are not happy

Hey all,

So as you may or may not know I have an 04 BMW 330xi. Apparently I have done something irritating to the BMW gods. I have no mods and the car is stock set up. driving great never any issues. The other night I came home from work as usual, car drove great, parked it in the garage as usual and shut her down. Next day I come out to go to work. Bang, no crank condition. Batt is reading 12.5 volts through obd with no codes. So had it towed to my local Indy. I think it's the ews anti theft and or the ring antenna.Yes the keys to the vehicle are working locks and all comes on as normal when key is put in the ignition. I'll let you guys know when I do. Not happy. Anyhow, what are your opinions on whats wrong.
P.S have other keys to order, not done as of yet.

This is how the starter generally fails- suddenly. Try to pop start it if you have a manual transmission. Can also try to give the starter a good whack. If it does start, I wouldn't shut it off until you get it to a shop or someplace you can work on it.

You mean like tap it two times gently with a hammer?

You won't have room to swing a hammer. Hit the end of a broomstick with a hammer.

You should check wire connections at the alternator, battery, starter, and the jump start post under the hood.

OP if you want to hit the starter get a long metal rod 2-3 feet long and beat on it.

If you can roll start the car, that should let you know if its the starter.

I've had one of my keys not work on the XI due to the battery in the key itself going bad. Yes that bad key would remotely open the doors. I did a scan of the car(using PA Soft) when starting the car with that key it was tripping the anti theft code on the car.

Ok all,
Drum roll please. It's the starter. I opted for the BMW starter not the after market. The cost at my local Indy is 900 out the door. Should have my baby back tomorrow. Is 900 high for a BMW starter with the labor, again 9 large out the door. Also i am mechanically inclined, how hard is the starter to put in. This is my first BMW I've ever owned.

FTL_Bimmer and I had the intake off the his car in prob an 1.5-2 hours. Once that is out of the way putting the new starter in would be cake. Prob 5-10 minutes and figure another 1.5-2 hours for the intake to go back on. Now that I have removed the intake prob 45 minutes max.

You can remove the starter without removing the intake but that seems like by the time you got done cussing you could have just removed the intake to make it easy. While you are saving money you can do the whole " while I'm in there replacement".

9 large is a lot but it is mostly labor and having the right wrench to get the bolts out due to the cramped quarters. I followed a diy and took approximately 7 hours to change it, put a Denso starter in because that's what came out. Had to be the hardest job I've done on this car with all the stiff you need to remove just to get at the starter.

Damn it. I figured 900 was high. That price included the towing from my house to the shop and the diag time which is 105.00. The shop that does my work for me sets up the tow and puts that tow cost on the bill.

Fvck that don't pay that much. I replaced mine in four hours and replaced all the hoses and gaskets at the same time. Not difficult just time consuming.

My starter died the same way. Cost 600-700 to replace if I remember correctly at local indy shop.

Final tally was 1036.00 for starter. They had to add 1 extra hour for broken exhaust bolt which had to be drilled out and then put a new bolt on. They went in from the bottom. I am Really pissed because he said I have an oil leak. Oil is all over under side of front half of car. All though oil is with in normal on dip stick. I am buying after market warrenty. I believe I bought myself a real **** show. This car is going to break my bank. Then to top it off I put new shoes on the wife's car to the tune of 636.00. 1670 dollar day. What a f'ed up day

Check the OFHG for leak, common culprit.

You bought an older BMW, if you don't want this kinda of stuff to happen get new car. You just spend 1/3 of what I've spent in 3 years on my XI on just the stater. If you cannot DIY or have lots of money to burn these cars will break your soul.

How the hell did they go in from the bottom. I don't believe that's possible with the XI. I'm going to get my car in the air and look. Sounds like a load of BS...the exhaust is on the opposite side of the car also.

"Nine Large" would be $9,000 not $900.

Yeah that's what's killing me. I've made some bad decisions in the past. I think this one may top most of them. Don't get me wrong I love the vehicle. It drives wonderfully. As I said before I think I'm going to buy a warranty. I also think I paid too much as other posters on this board of said I paid too much. Although I did get a Bosch starter which apparently is what BMW uses. And there is a warranty 12 months or 12,000 miles. Here's the kicker I drive 1680 miles a month to and from work that doesn't include any other driving I do. I had a Ford Crown Vic is my daily driver for 2 1/2 years. The car was a joy to own.

How much did you pay? Some of the posters on this forum don't take into account that markets are not the same. My car would sell for far less in San Fan then Seattle.

I'll be honest doing a starter is not fun on these cars. Some of the other maintenance is pretty easy and this forum has the best DIY's information of any car forum out there period. Abuse it, give back, and save some money.

If he used a hammer on the exhaust bolts then your post cat sensors are likely bad and might trigger a light soon.
