Cruisin' the net: OK this is caused by a faulty reverse gear syncro ,bent shift fork or bad reverse gear.Either way the transmission needs to come out of the truck and then the case opened up to see what has happened then the faulty parts replaced. This is a costly repair and a lot of times is cheaper to replace the unit with a salvage unit. This is the issue and what needs to be checked next.

Remove the linkage from the trans, it is a single pinned rod and a ball/cup connection. Manually select reverse by pushing the selector shaft into the trans fully (towards the front of the car) then twisting it the only direction it will go, the top towards the drivers side of the car.

Hop in, and hold the clutch down and start it. Try backing up. If it pops out of gear, it is an internal trans problem, likely the reverse idler gear, and the trans would need removed and taken apart and repaired.

If it stays in gear just fine, it is a linkage issue
