GSG 522 SD Build thread

Impulsed purchased a GSG 522 SD over the weekend. Picked it up at Dicks Sporting Goods for $329. Took it shooting the same day and all I can say is WOW I'm in love with this gun!

Ergonomics, accuracy, and value all come with this gun. Ran through 200 rounds of cheap blazer ammo without a single malfunction. I was able to lay sub 6 inch groups at 150 yards with the factory sights.

Here is a good write up on the gun:

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/201...ns-gsg-522-sd/

Reading around, it is essential to replace the factory screw set with an updated aftermarket kit. Im waiting on a response back from a vendor to let me know if the kit that is available (for the older GSG 5) will fit the newer 522's. Also, factory HK break down pins are a common upgrade.

Picture of the gun:

Size comparison with my AR build I did awhile back:

What I have on order:

ECHO-1 side folding stock:

SEF lower:

I would love to SBR this with a real suppressor and eventually go full auto.... (time to start applying for tax stamps )

*** Ill update this as stuff comes in ***

Looks like a fun range toy. I can't wait to get my.22 can. No stamp for full auto though unless you become a manufacturer and make a sample. I like the folding stock a lot.

Received and installed the lower and stock Monday night, See below:

Next on the list is some DIY some trigger work, it is a two stage trigger but the break is spongy.

Looks good. I presoanlly prefer the retractable one to the folding but I'm not upgrading anytime soon. I did check the screws on mine and they were the tiniest bit loose. I'm on the fence about guying the "kit" online though. Could probably put it together cheaper at the hardware store.

Yea the retractable stock was my second choice (Im 6'4'' and the echo 1 stock was a full size stock) I dont know if the retractable stock is full size or not.

Im sure that you can buy all the screws at a hardware store for half the price but it would take you an hour + tracking everything down. I have the light weight version so I had a few extra screws left over. I can send you the ones I have left once Im done with the bolt and carrier.

I'm not clear what the lightweight version looks like? You bought the $15 bag off that site I assume?

Holy crap that's a lot bigger than I thought!

I'm thinking about an Umarex 22lr MP5 or a Sig 522. Dunno which one yet.

The light weight version has a plastic upper receiver (if I would have known there was a metal one available I would have been glad to pay the extra coin, like I mentioned this was an impulse buy...). Correct, its the $15 kit from rrages.com.

My buddy who has fired an MP5 says the sizing is correct. It is very ergonomic and a blast to shoot. Stated above, I would look into the non light weight version. It doesn't feel cheap by any means, i'm having trouble with the upper rail (which is metal sandwiched between the two plastic upper receiver parts) Moving a couple thousandths of an inch front to back, which I feel is unacceptable...

Ok, I'm not the lightweight version then. That movement would enrage me.

Yea it pisses me off too. I have the movement almost completely gone by using space age ultra high strength epoxy (JB Weld...). I'm not putting a high power scope on this, just put a red dot reflex sight on that I pulled off my airsoft gun. Im going to sight it in this week. If it holds zero at 50 yards I will be happy (I also have the true HK iron sights comming in so I may just use those).

I have an NC Star reddot and the mounting bracket that they sell on amazon. The entire rig was 40 bucks. It's dead on at 25 yards.

Did some light trigger work (lightened the trigger slide and did some cutting on the hammer strut) and installed the HK style charging handle, tube, and front sight (have an HK rear sight on the way) over the weekend.

Found a great post from a guy on how to turn the factory trigger into pretty much a target trigger (a lot less first stage pull and about 3lbs on the second). I'll attempt this after purchasing a better set of files...

***Ill post the link later, looks like ar15.com is down for some reason***
