Mishimoto oil cooler

Anyone has this on an m54 engine? Haven't found anyone doing this

Plan to install behind the kidney grills and getting the cap for the filter housing gasket as so:

Looks like you just mount the cooler and run the lines to the filter cap and that's it

I thought using the oil filter housing is a no-no to feed and return oil for coolers. I would imagine that you'd want a thermostat for a street driven car.

Here's a picture of my setup which uses the VAC billet housing and an inline filter. The filter element is reusable and filters pretty well. Easy to clean and not messy as long as you wait for the lines to drain...just need to let the car sit awhile.

If I didn't have the twinscrew compressor snout to deal with, I would have went with an S54 oil filter housing, spacer, p/s pump bracket, banjo bolt and -10AN line adaptor setup.

you don't need a pump to run it?

Yes...your oil pump runs it.

Jake, why do I think you're preparing your car for the track...or maybe runway?

BigJae, I have to say that that's an impressive setup you have, and from your sig, I guess you do track, but I also have to say that I'd think that for all but a 12-hr. race, it wouldn't be necessary at all...and even then...our cars drive out of the factory showroom right onto the Autobahn at 100 mph (only during break-in, then 128) without an oil cooler.

I don't know which has a greater heat capacity, oil or coolant, but I'd worry a bit about adding any restriction to the radiator, which already has a condenser blocking it. I'm sure that's mostly just me and not a serious issue...if oil does have a greater heat capacity, maybe that restriction is more than compensated for with additional oil cooling.

So Jake, when you going to leverage your position to set up an E46 Fanatics runway drag race day?

The only thing with the autobahn is that the cars are not near redline as they speed along it. If they are at higher revs nearer to redline, they are going so fast that massive amounts of cooling air is making sure nothing overheats. But, when tracking, redline is always a hair away and at much lower speeds. The more revs, the more friction, the more heat.
