You'll like this. It has nothing to do with photoshop but it's the artist who has done most if not all of the work you've posted http://leifpodhajsky.com/GALLERY-1

edit: gonna throw this guy in the mix too while I'm at it http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelpaukner/page2/

And are you just wanting to make a frame? Like a thick border with nothing in it?

I want to take a png of a shape and create an outline of the shape then leave only the outline. And yes, Leif is the best. I rage at how good he is.

For example: take a png and add a 3px stroke. I want the bloody stroke all alone, by itself, just for me.

I'm sure there's a more efficient way but this took me all of 2 minutes.

Make shape.
Duplicate shape and expand
Change color of smaller shape on top
flatten layers
select color range of smaller shape
cut
If you want to copy just the frame, select color range of the frame

Well it's a logo so it won't work that way. Thanks for the help.

I actually figured it out. Select the image, create new layer, edit>stroke, delete original layer. There is your outline.

  1. Convert original image to grayscale, then back to color.
  2. Tweak Levels to get the desired amount of darks, lights, and mid-range grays. This is the key step and may need some practice or more guidance.
  3. Select all and copy.
  4. Create new layer... make it solid teal color.
  5. Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q).
  6. Paste.
  7. Exit Quick Mask Mode (Q).
  8. Fill selection with peach color.
