Well, you've got some faulty parts then. Wasn't your car an accident car?

Everything on a good condition alternator will still work if you dunk it in fresh water(minus bearings). The voltages are too low and fresh water doesn't conduct electricity well enough. Everything sensitive is usually potted in epoxy.
