Post 2004 330i smg with what feels like clutch engagement problems

Hi all,

As the title says I have a 2004 330i with the smg and performance pack. A couple days ago i started the car up, put it into first gear. As I went to take off, the car rev'd up, slowly started to engage, and started to move, like someone was riding the clutch. After about 30 seconds or so, and at ~2500 rpm it felt like the clutch was let all the way out, you can feel the mechanics engage, and the car jerked forward.

The car is driving like this in any gear, half engaged right away, then all of a sudden, full engagement. At first I thought it was smg problems, so first things first, I replaced the salmon coloured relay, and checked/filled the hydraulic fluid. It didn't do anything.

I don't think it is the smg pump or hydraulics because the car comes out of gear easily and the clutch is pushed in right away. I can also hear the pump prime, so its not that.

I feels to me like the clutch is getting stuck in the open position either the release bearing is gone, or the spring is weakened, or a combination of the two. Or it could be the hydraulic actuator is gummed up and getting stuck in to out position, but I think the force from the hydraulics should be more than enough to pull the actuator back, especially considering it just compressed the clutch spring.

My local shop (not an actual bmw dealer but specialize in bmw, audi, volvo etc) wants to take a look and the clutch, that means 6 hours of tear down and rebuild just to see if that's the problem. For the cost if they do the tear down I'm going to get them to replace the clutch.

But before I do that does anybody have any advice on anything I should check before that?

I forgot to mention that there are no warning light or codes

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

well, the hydraulics disengage, the engagement is all up to the pressure plate.. it sounds like a control issue, not a clutch issue.

I am really not familiar with what controls the SMG uses or what sensors it has, but I would wager its not the clutch itself, especially if it firmly engages

Sounds like you're having a overheating issues ... I'm having the same issue too especially during raffic jams. Two most likely causes would be 1) SMG teach-in procedure basically a SMG reset for clutch engagement point or 2) The clutch position sensor is going south ..

Have you check the actuator for leaks?

Sorry for the late update. Car is in the garage with the transmission out. Both clutch and flywheel are badly worn and are being replaced along with position sensor and some spring on the outside of the tranny since it is torn out. There are no visible signs of leaking from the actuator. I will update again once everything is back together and hopefully it all works out.

I have the same problem with my car. It has been at the BMW "specialist" for 3 months now with no luck. I tried 3 different clutches had the flywheel done checked the slave cylinder still no difference.
To be honest I think they're taking the Micky with how long it's taking.
Did replacing the sensor work? Would be very helpful to know what to do next as I wasn't told anything about a clutch position sensor.

Hey toughface,

No replacing the sensor did not work. My car has also been in the shop for 3 months. We tried the position sensor, and tested for solenoid faults in the hydraulic unit itself. Turned out not to be any of the three solenoids, which is good because BMW doesn't sell them separately, so that would have meant a new one $$$. The shop then went to say that it is most likely the ecu, $ 1000 + here in canada for a new one.

The shop I'm working with have been pretty good so far except for the amount of time all of this is taking. We decided that we would swap the smg for a 6 speed. As it stands now I have a 6 speed manual sourced and they are trying to find shifter linkage, clutch and brake pedal, and master/ slave cylinders.
