NoVA Fanatics

I originally posted this in General forum, but I feel here is probably more adequate. Not sure how to delete my other post tho...
ANYWAY! I'm recently moved to the NoVa area and looking for good contacts when it comes to BMW's. I'm looking to become a DIY'er so we'll see how that goes. Any good indie shops and stuff like that ?
Thanks

I've been reading mixed things about RRT in Dulles, I wonder why people have negative responses towards them.

I haven't had any problems with them, and I've had three different cars there for various things.
Nice guys too.

Any suggestions for a good indy in the NOVA area to perform an SMG tranny fluid and rear diff fluid changes for my e46 M3. Don't have enough confidence in my local dealer to let them do the job. Thanks for the suggestions.

There's a decent place in Springfield I took my dad's Merc to for tranny fluid change. Pretty fair people there and they seem to do good work. It's called German Auto Group.

When I absolutely must take my car in to a shop, I go to a place in Herndon called Autoscandia. They used to be a Volvo shop, but have expanded to also work on German cars in recent years. Hands down the best shop I've ever been to. Superb quality of work at a fraction of what you'd pay at the dealer (and RRT). They also treat you with respect and don't assume you're an idiot.

My boss has a 335xi and needs brakes done. He got a quote from the dealer with exact parts/time so I told him to call AutoScandia and RRT to get some quotes to cross reference. RRT actually came in with the lowest quote of the three, I found that quite shocking considering all the neg rep they get on here.

And, another guy that works at the same company has a Volvo 850 station wagon, it's turbo. Well it had some problems, and he dropped some coin at AutoScandia. Got the car back still problems back to AutoScandia. Got the car back and the cooling system exploded 2 days later.

Now he rides a bike to work, no bullshit

I can only speak from my personal experiences with dealers, RRT, and Autoscandia. What I like about Autoscandia is how DIY friendly they are. I've dropped off numerous bushing carriers there to have new bushings pressed in. I walked in there with a whole subframe under my arm and they didn't hesitate to say they'd do it. You can also supply your own parts. Unfortunate to hear about your colleague's Volvo, sounds like an anomaly.

I may have to give RRT a second chance though come time to reinforce my subframe mounts. Can't think of another reputable shop in the area with this experience.

yeah, I think the Volvo was doomed when he bought it from his wifes best friends husband. The car looked good though, just a piece of chit.

Pretty cool that AutoScandia pushing bushings for a good price. I hate pushing bushings, it's such a pain.

I don't think the OP can go wrong with either of those

Its actually Arlington, I used to live around the corner from them. (It is very close to Alexandria though)
I had my car in there twice. They did good work.
I supplied my own parts too. (Cooling system overhaul kit) They were ok with it. They said they could only warranty 30 days vs 1 year because I supplied the parts.

Yeah, no idea why I said Alexandria. They've been easy to work with when I've dealt wit them. Also, two of the few body shops I really trust are within a block.

I'm going to be 100 percent honest, I wouldn't trust my car with anyone in fairfax or herndon, maybe reston but that's doubtful too. There is a dinan and a bmw body shop in Merrifield I think? Don't quote me on it, you should check those out too

You guys are referring to Fairfax Service Center (Not BMW of Fairfax). They do quality work. I've been taking my car to them for 2.5 years now. Plus they offer free loaners when available if work will take a while, or shuttle to Dunn Loring Metro, which also is within walking distance.

Stay away from German Auto Group in Springfield, they put non OEM spark plugs in my car which ended up costing me serous engine damage (spark plug got loose and pierced engine cover while driving on 66).
