Olympics - Swimming Q

Why do they have the breaststroke, backstoke, and butterfly? Isn't the point to just get to the other side of the pool?

In track & field, they don't have the backward running event, or running on all fours.

Well, the butterfly stroke is a LOT more difficult than the breaststroke or the crawl, so it's not the same thing.

And they DO have different field & track events. You have different distances (so that endurance and pacing are more important in the longer races), and you do have the 100m dash AND the 100m hurdles (let's add things to jump over).

Running backwards is hard, too.

And we could easily just make it all open style and put in different obstacles... sharks, jellyfish, piranhas, etc.

robbing with a sword is a good thing

So we are adding events just b/c they are difficult? What about throwing sharks or hungry piranna into the pool?

Swimming has different distances too, I have no issue with that.

Butterfly is more taxing by most measures, but breaststroke is the most difficult to master and certainly the most difficult to swim fast. In medley races, the breast is often the weakest link in the swimmers skill set.

It's more akin to running, hurdles, triple jump, long jump, pole jump, high jump. Seems like a lot of different ways to jump and run if you ask me

The point is to get to through the race in that particular swimming style/method.

So what if I'm from a third-world country that can't afford one of these "new" [controversial] swimsuits that is suppose to make swimmers go even faster? Those countries that have them have an unfair advantage (i.e., performance enhancement) over me. They better hand them out to every swimmer.

Are you talking about the Speedo LZR? My guess is that if you make the Olympic Team for your country, you can manage to get your hands on one of these suits...free of charge.

Yeah, those new Speedos. I hope every swimmer gets one (just to level the competition).

Are you getting one? I got one through a kid in my squad.

edit: Don't have it yet, I should add. I should though before it really comes out.

Heavens no! $550.00 for a suit? I don't rank high enough in the Masters Swimming food chain to require such a suit (a suit that will only last for a few meets by the way). I do have a Fastskin II Jammer though for meets. Far more affordable.

Do you know what you're asking?
In FREE-STYLE , you're free to swim in any style, just have to be fastest to win gold. it just happens that front-crawl is the way to win , but if you want to go butterfly or whatever, you can do that.

as for why have all the different style? that's like asking why have all different events. the answer is -- there's no point/meaning to the games. if enough people want to do it (running on all fours) and IOC allows it then it's in the Olympics.
