Unhappy Diagnosis?!?! weird thudding sound from rear left wheel!

soooooo was just driving then all of a sudden when i was using 3rd and 2nd gears to slow me down before approaching traffic lights i got this weird thudding sound coming from my rear left tyre area.

At first i thought something was stuck to my wheel because thats what it sounded like as i slowed down so did the amount of times i heard the thudding sound from my rear left.

Looked under car and cant see and obstructions rubbing against the wheel or anything.

ANY IDEAS??????!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

no there is a rubber coupling thing between the drive shaft and the diff to reduce any sudden torque rotation. it could be torn.

Oh I didn't see he changed symtpoms to the center. Nor have I ever heard of a rear driveshaft, but since you have an xi it makes sense why you specified/word it like that. I am plenty aware of the guibo (aka flex disc), having posted about it well over 50 times in my years on this forum.
Yep a thud in the center underneath with rotation could certainly be the guibo and even the csb. although bad guibo is more acceleration than downshift.

Actually it's a flexible rubber disc between the transmission and driveshaft, not the diff.

Since you originally heard the sound near the left rear tire, pull back the carpet in your trunk on the left side, and have a look at your rear shock mount. It won't cost anything to look, and I am wondering if your rear shock mount has failed. With the carpet pulled away, inspect it for any obvious damage, and then have someone press down on the car, while you watch what happens in the trunk. Look for part of the shock shaft pushing into the trunk, or any movement at all. Do this, just to rule it out. Search the forum for failed RSM.
Because guibo issues tend to start gradually, and get noisier over time. A good shot to a pothole could be all it takes to make a rear shock mount fail.

Well no it's not just "close" to the transmission, it's connected to it.

here read this and follow the instructions to check it. my post #4

No the driveshaft won't fall off, it's held on by bolts. But it cud damage the Center Support Bearing (csb) if left to get really bad for too long.
if one is unable to inspect one's car, it's never a bad idea to have it inspected by a Professional. you don't want to damage other parts and have it cost more. or cause an accident.
