:fault with the computer warning light saying boot open. should the hood still work if warning light on

No, the system uses that light to determine if boot is open in order to disable hood (there's a physical conflict even it it's open an inch).

Check the wiring in the rubber loom that runs from bootlid to car body. When the wires inside break, they can short, cause lights (reversing, number plate) to go dark and and falsely report things like an open boot.
