@breiwa1 - sounds like what I would do, except I can't find any 200k+ for sale around here :S
@redbull 325is - thanks for the reference
@zander271 - replied to your PM
For tax purposes donating it will only matter if you itemize your deductions...and if alone or combined with other itemized deductions is greater than your standard deduction.

I have a feeling that when you donate a car, the organization then sells the car and using the money from the sale for whatever it is they do. I doubt that they give away the actual car to people. :/

OP,

You're writing as if a 200K mile bmw is worthless. It makes me feel sad...and below worthless, since I'm at 236K miles now.

I couldn't give my bmw away...not coz no one would want it, but because I couldn't give it away! In my fantasy world, I have a perfectly running 3 that's practically brand new. It's not, of course, but that's the lie I tell myself!

No joke. Last fall I sold my (admittedly mint and slightly modded) 211k mile 1995 318i for 3400 ... and it sold in two days. If I waited, I easily could have fetched my asking price of 3800.

Put it on ebay ... might not be worth much in your local market, but trust me, BMWs aren't cheap everywhere ... someone will pay decent money for it.

That was a nice car... I was surprised to see you part with it.

I'm sure many other people have already said it, but dibs.

No, seriously, how much do you want for it? I have 214k on my 323i (with the original clutch even) and I fully plan to keep it until something really horrible happens. These cars are pretty damn reliable if you keep up on maintenance.

If it's in decent condition, I'm serious, if no one else has been yet that is.

It has to be a manual though, otherwise, I fully understand why you'd want to get rid of it regardless of how many miles it has.

I am driving a 330ci manual with 200,000 miles. I expect to be driving it for another 200,000 miles.

Numerous BMW master techs have driven it and tell me there is no reason to think I won't be able to drive it for years to come.

My car is well taken care of, things repaired before they break.

No way of knowing how long it'll last, of course, but I remain a staunch supporter of these well built automobiles.

There's a guy on here building an Alfa romeo project car who says he wishes he could get into a BMW.

If you're seriously considering donation, I think he'd be a great candidate.

My 325xiT 5 speed has 250,000 on the clock. Rebuilt the suspension with powerflex bushings and it drives like smexx. When it throws a connecting rod Ill just swap a new engine in it. SOMEONE, like me, looking for a project will buy it. bought mine for 4k (hahaha,+ A LOT for parts and repairs.)

I've got over 230k on mine and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. That being said, 200k is kind of a mentally scary threshold in terms of selling it. 180k sounds "high mileage", 200k sounds like "past its expiration date" even though it really isn't that much of a difference.

But if you are really just looking to get rid of it, throw it on the for sale section here and on craigslist for $4,00 and I bet it will be gone in a couple weeks. Now if $4k is not worth the hassle money to you, then sure, donate. Or if your feeling generous, sell and give the money to a charity of your choice.

I bought a 240k mile E36 without a second thought, drove it another 15k then sold it to my brother who still drives it today.

Your car isn't a time bomb, just maintain it and it'll keep on going and going and going...
