For the ARC-8's, you could go with 17x9" ET42 or 18x9" ET42 square as a track setup. What kind of tires are you looking to put on? If they are street tires you could go with 245/40/17 on the 17" ARC-8s or 245/35/18's. R-compound tires run wider than normal street tires so they may require smaller sizing or increased camber in the front in order to fit correctly.

Adding camber to the front of your car will also improve the handling characteristics and tire life on you E46. You will notice increased stability in the corners on the track with added camber which will make you a faster driver. If you have insufficient negative camber and are driving hard on the track, the outer edge of your tire will wear faster than the inner edge, so dialing in a couple of degrees will help balance out the uneven tire wear thus extending the life of your tires. Using a square setup will further increase tire longevity because you will be able to rotate your tires front to rear.

By asking about a square setup, you are already on the right track. If you are looking for an easier setup, you could always go with 17x8.5" ET40 square or 18x8.5" ET38 square and 235 width tires. I hope I was able to help you out in your decision. Please let me know if you have any other questions and I'd be happy to help you out.
