Which code readers? Are they BMW code readers or generic OBD-II readers.

Generic code readers. I went to AutoZone, O'Reilly's and my friends reader.
It use to be able to read the codes.

Generic code readers should work. Like the previous post says ignition must be ON. Not Accessory. ON. There is a DME update required on some cars to get reliable OBD-II operation on certain production run. I think that was only on some M3s.

Yes, the key is on ignition.
Also, the autozone and o'reilly guys tried to get a reading and it failed.
I tried the reader on our other car and it works.

Your profile shows you have a 2000 model year car.

Do you have the round connector under the hood?

If so, likely you may need to try to connect under the hood with a round pin adapter and/or you may have a wiring problem with your underdash connector.

Well I guess fortunately for me the service light went off.
I just received the Peake reader, but I may send it back to Amazon for
a refund if the service engine soon light doesn't come on.

I hit the 200k barrier today.....

On MY2000, you need to use the round diagnostic port under the hood.
