My Ride: 2003 330i Sedan
Talking 2003 330i My first BMW Project "Grocery Racer"

have been lurking the forum for a month or so. My friend got a Black and Cinnamon E46 M3 a few months ago. he let me drive it and I fell in love. Was my first time ever driving a BMW period.
I have a '04 Land Rover Discovery, and a very clean 1990 Mazda Miata that is my toy.

I had to have a BMW but an M3 just aint in my budget plans right now. So I was searching locally in ATL for a E46 330i Sedan. My friend with the M3 said he would BERATE me if I got a 330ci coupe, for not getting an M3..lol

So I figured I would look for a 330i Sedan, as I could use a commuter sedan that is halfway decent on gas, and an AUTOMATIC (I would only get an M3 in a manual)

so I searched for a 330i Sedan in good condition between $4K and $6K

After seeing JUNK for a month, came across a mechanic owned car today and have agreed upon a deal. I will pick it up tomorrow (Black exterior, Brown interior with 178K on the clock) Mechanic bought it at a repo auction and swapped in a rebuilt transmission, evap coil, and put on a set of the premium wheels. So at the pricepoint I was looking for ...this was the cleanest 330i Sedan.

picked up today for $5K

I does look pretty clean for having 178k on the clock, but I think you could have got it for less. I got my 2000 323i with 130k on the clock for $5500 with two sets of wheels, albeit it did need work in the past 4 years I've owned it. Maybe the market in Atlanta is different, but anyways what's your plans for the car?

Yes,
It is a very strong used car market in Atlanta, thus inflating prices. My friends even travel to Texas & Florida to get cars under market. Hell my homie had bought his E46 M3 out in New Mexico and drove back to Atlanta.

Plus its close to tax season so the inexpensive CASH CAR prices are becoming inflated. If I waited to the end of the month to buy... I probably would have been looking at $5,500 - $6,000 for the vehicle all day long.

Plans for the car are to stay with my Grocery Getter theme. So it will be clean (not too aggressive) and all the modifications having "driveabliity" and "real world" usage as the primary concerns. But we will have some fun

Euro market in general is pretty strong in Georgia because of SoWo.

Ah I see, yeah here in Hawaii the used car market is limited so you can get cars for cheap sometimes.

Can't wait to see what you do with her. Love black sedans!

So an eventful last few days.

had driven the car about 100 miles and SERVICE ENGINE SOON light pops on

codes
p1071 , and p1074

then noticed I had a few chips in the window.

Started to take it to SAFELITE $109 but they didnt have an appointment open till later in the week. So I went to Autozone and got a windshield repair kit for $13 DIY.

Dropped the car off at the INDY German Auto Repair.

To address the code car needs some new hoses, thermostat

Then they tell me I have a coolant leak (yes I noticed some leaking under the car when I dropped it off)

so that needs new expansion tank and all the goodies associated.

Then the A/C belt is in bad shape.

oh then we not done. The mechanic says that my control arm bushings are shot (The car was making some rattling sounds). Mechanic says I can wait on replacing the bushings. But I ask "how long".........he says "probably a few weeks".

He quotes me $1,865 to fix EVERYTHING. So I ask him for that price can he also replace the broken clips on the front bumper.. and set it flush. He agrees.

Feeling uneasy about all this. I drove up to the shop on my lunch break to check on the car and speak to the mechanic face to face.

He takes me into the bay and shows me the car on the lift. he pulls out my control arms and shows me the rotten bushings on the arms. YES they needed to be replaced. He mentioned that they he didn't know they were in that shape when he spoke to me on the phone.... that when they pulled them off... he saw just how bad they really where.

sigh. Oh well I was planning on getting some H&R springs and some stereo equipment for the car.............. that will have to wait a bit.

At least I will have a car that is in tip-top shape.

Don't stress it, any used vehicle purchase you should expect to have to drop some coin into in the beginning. It sucks but at least you'll know where the car is at now and can plan/adjust accordingly.

You are correct. I bought the car with the full intentions of MODDING it.

No sense putting lipstick on car that is NOT in tip top shape.
