Is there such thing as too many oil changes?

116K Miles, only use BMW oil or German castrol, is every 3-5k too soon?
I have heard people say synthetic oil needs to be left in the engine a little longer.
Its' been 4k miles since my last change and i'm thinking of changing it soon. Am i hurting the engine at all by doing this??

You can* damage the engine by having low intervals, and 3-5k is excessive. 7.5k is what most indy shops I've talked to recommend. Unless you are really beating on it.

*edited to correct information

Go 10K miles...no issue at all.

Stop thinking about changing it soon...absolutely no need.

Yes, our synthetic oil takes time to completely build up the protective layer on the engine parts. If you change it at those intervals, you are wasting your own time, money, and actually disadvantaging your engine.

It's amazing to me that a non M E46 is such a beautiful car but the E46 M has never done much for me.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) did a study on synthetic oils some years ago, and found that the lubricity of the oil actually increased over the first several thousand miles, then remained fairly stable up until the test was ended at about 16-18,000 miles. Can't remember all the specifics involving pollutants in the oil, etc., but as I recall, their recommendation was to follow the car maker's recommended oil change intervals. I have to admit, though, that coming from the old days before synthetics were available, I still feel a little nervous when the oil starts turning dark.

no idea i never document my oil changes which may sound stupid but since my good buddy gets bmw 5-30 for 4 bucks a quart and i drive my car very hard all the time i tend to change it when i feel it hasent been changed in a while..

so apparently i have been putting my engine at a disadvantage by changing the engine oil every 2 months or less, im guessing i cover maybe 2-3k over that time.

The only thing you'll be hurting is your wallet.
And the environment by disposing of so much oil unnecessarily.

A BMW approved oil will easily last 10,000 miles of street striving.

Replacing the oil more often is bad for your wallet, and bad for the environment.

I'm unsure whether to change at 9,000 miles or 12,000 miles (15,000km or 20,000km) personally.

Well I'll be damned, I was unaware of that.
