Shifting Problems

Goodmorning guys, so since i have purchased the car it has had some funky, worrisome shifting problems. Its a 6MT 2002 M3, and they only got more profound with the short shifter. On to the problem......Its just notchy in general...which i can deal with. However i cannot deal with the occasional grinding when im shifting into 2nd. Ive adapted to holding in the clutch for 2 seconds then throwing it into 2nd. Same kind of problem happens with 3rd. Now something i have done some research on is the clunking in the back when you shift. People say drive train slack, guibo, cracked subframe, diff ect ect. Have any of you guys ran into and fixed these problems? If so, what did you do to get around them? Im going to start by upgrading the trans and diff fluid to the new-er BMW spec'd oil. And then what should i start attacking? Mounts? Bushings?

On mine i find i have to look for 2nd and 3rd gear or its fights back when u go to that gear. Not so much grinding just hits something kinda idk how to explain it. I also have the rattle at slow speeds when depressing the clutch. Most ppl are having the clunk. Idk im planning to take mine for isnp. 2 and maybe they can look at that. Gl hope someone can be more helpful.

Its plenty helpful knowing someone is in the same boat. I agree, sometimes it not so much of a grinding, it just snags on something. Either way, scary

I don't know the cause of it. It doesnt happen all the time just if I jump foward really fast from a full stop or rolling back. Might be one of those mysteries like u said... Oh yea and Dakar is my fav. color. A real head turner sticks out from the crowd. Its my 3rd M3 and all the same color. 95 e36 M3 Dakar then a 97 e36 M3 Dakar and now 02 E46 again Dakar...lol I was gonna get PY or LSB but then I came across mine and I jumped on it.

I have never seen one in my area. Ever. Hell....ive only seen mine and a LSB one. If you find anything out about the noise let me know. How many miles does your car have on it?

I had the ppi done and there was no clunking during my test drive. the ppi showed no subframe cracking at least thats what i was told. After a month or so and me driving the m3 for the first time i hear clunking when i shift. Hope i didnt crack anything. Havent done any burnouts or anything, yellow/orange (7.5k-8 rpms - 1st and 2nd gears) lined it few times but come on!

Im in the same boat dude. I didnt hear anything upon my test drive. Idk....its driving me crazy. Sometimes my clutch feels really stiff other times its nice and smooth. Ive done a couple take off tests in 3rd. Stalled. 2nd to 5th no RPM jump so i think the clutch is good.

I think you should get it checked out properly by a BMW mechanic, most will add the inspection cost to the repairs so a bit of saving there but ultimately they know more than we do since we can't hear or see the car in person. I had a lumpy idle and it turned out to be a sensor, I was scared as hell of an actual mechanical issue so yh a good BMW specialist will sort you out. Good luck.

I know this is an old thread however I have the exact same issue. My Indy tells me it's the clutch. I'm having it replaced along with all other componets while they are in there.

I'll update you next week whether the issues are gone or not.

The clunking noise in the back could be:

differential bushing

that's all i know!


I've had a separate occasion after having a new clutch installed, where the clunk kept increasing so I took it back to the shop who installed the clutch. I would describe this problem as going away upon acceleration, but if cruising or decelerating, there would be a constant vibration, way beyond what an unbalanced tire would do. Checked the drive shaft, the flange started cracking so I had another driveshaft installed. When I drove home, I noticed they didn't even torque down the differential bolts as they were all hand tight and one had fallen out.

Well thats just outright terrible man....

Since i started this thread i have changed:

Clutch (and all associated components I.e pressure plate, flywheel, spring, pivot pin, throw out & pilot bearing)
Diff fluid
Trans fluid
Clutch pedal bushings
RSMS

All of these maintenance items helped out greatly, the clutch stopped the grind (about 95% of the time, only acts up now when cold) The new fluids, stopped the clunk for a good while! I should have used the BMW OE diff oil. Instead i went with redline, because im a dumbass. The oil has obviously deteriorated because now i have the diff noise when turning around at the end of the street. So that will be changed along with:

Guibo
Center support bearing
Diff bushings front and back
Subframe bushings (along with reinforcement and weld as a crack has been found)

I expect this to eliminate the majority of the remaining symptoms. However i dont think ill ever really get rid of it all completely. These cars are noisy. It is what it is.

RTABs can make a clunk noise, sometimes almost sounds like 'pop' - a symptom can also be a bit of wandering on the road at higher speeds... Have you checked the RTABs yet - didn't see it on the list? Pretty cheap to replace, the alignment is typically the most expensive part of the job.

RTABS and DIFF BUSHINGS are the two that I would check first.

i have the same sound when I engage the clutch on 1st gear during slow stop sometimes but not all the time..

what is wrong with redline Differential oil??? im about to replace my tranny and diff oil with redline fluids

I would recommend Amsoil MTF over the Redline MTL transmission oil. It has better cold weather shifting than the MTL and better overall shifting feel than the MTF2. I've had both.
You can use Redline 75w140 in the diff without issues. Change it every 30k miles.
