XBOX doesn't want you to have friends over for movies

Microsoft has filed for a Kinect-related patent, and it's a doozy of an application. The abstract describes a camera-based system that would monitor the number of viewers in a room and check to see if the number of occupants exceeded a certain threshold set by the content provider. If there are too many warm bodies present, the device owner would be prompted to purchase a license for a greater number of viewers.

I know... seriously. Why even put fourth the effort to patent the tech with such an obvious way around it?

You don't think they'd account for that? I imagine if the system detects that you've disconnected Kinect, it'll interrupt the content and require you to go through the authorization process again, or whatever they call it.

Yep. I was thinking that will likely be the case. In my basement, if I turn it around, it would detect my 50 gallon water heater in the next room....so it would essentially think at 400-500 lb person is watching. Not sure if they need a special license or not.

Anyway, if they do something like this, I'll have no interest in Xbox at all just on principle.

Why is that? To me, it's a gaming console first and foremost. I rarely ever watch movies on it.

Arguing with prepubescent twats calling you names is your preferred online experience? Whatever floats your boat.

And why would you? No Blu-Ray = sub-standard movie viewing experience.

Say what you will, but I didn't just make that up. It's a known fact, actually--I was literally in a market research meeting last week that outlined this fact.

Just like I wouldn't buy a TV/DVD(/Blu-Ray) combo device, I'm not interested in a gaming system for it's ability to play movies--I'm interested in playing games.

It was true in 2008. Not so much anymore. The train moves fast. Climb aboard!

Blu-Ray is a disc format that allows for much more content than a DVD. You still put discs into your XBOX for the content you specifically crave.

A typical DVD can have a max of 4.7 gigs packed on it. A Blu-Ray can load up to 33.4 gigs. It doesn't take a math genius to know more is better in this arena.

tbh, I don't even have one. If I end up buying a system (planning to do so with the next generation systems), I would want the option to view movies on it without being jerked around. I probably wouldn't have more than 8 people in a room watching, but I don't like the idea of what they are proposing and would gladly give my business to someone else to support my stance.
