Dude! You have a bigger problem . . . your steering wheel is on the incorrect side of the car! I'd get that looked at ASAP.

doesnt anybody hear the ticking noise? ive had 320 diesels and they and all other diesels have never made that tappety noise, and tcphoto to be fair i asked the seller everything however he was in a rush to sell, and the price was definatly too good to be true, so i pressume he knew what he was selling, however its my mistake for not getting it checked, all i want to do know is just have it sorted so i can drive it
, it sometimes is a little sluggish by the way guys.... i dont think the sound is very obvious in the video in person it definatly is noticeable jeff |

It sounds like a diesel truck. A diesel powered BMW should NOT be that loud. You shouldn't be able to hear much of a difference from a gasoline powered BMW. I don't know what it is but it does need to be corrected.

the lifters sound louder than they are cause the exhaust is blowing its not getting the back pressure. the ticking is the injectors which is normal. imo

it does sound like a diesel for transit lol.... ok so first point from now is to check the exhaust for leaks? if theres a leak and i sorted it would the injector or ticking noise go quiter? .. just dont know where to start with this, dont want to be spending lots of money and then also find that it isnt fixed....if id know what it is id just get it done...but due to the type of fault i just feel lost in regards to what to do

if the exhaust has a leak and get it fixed it will be a lot quieter than it is. its amazing how rough an engine can sound when the exhaust is blowing. proper chelsea tractor lol. when ya check it check the manifold all the back to tailpipe.

Your car sounds like a diesel truck, almost like a ford powerstroke. I agree with others that diesels are supposed to be loud and tappy, but this sounds like an exhaust leak fueling the issue here.

hi thanks for your replies, i dropped the car off to one of my local mechanics, he has checked the car and thinks the sound is coming from either the hydraulic lifters or the bottom end crank.... he said he can change the lifters for £150 labour and i would have to pay for the lifters, or he will fit an engine for £300 + engine cost.... what do u think i should do? .....

Contrary to previous comments that is a bit noisy. You got oil in the sump? What's the oil pressure like? Maybe its not getting to the top of the engine in sufficient quantity. Running a bit dry?

Usually it's the lifters that have worn over time and get loose. Have him replace the lifters. I remember adjusting so many lifters on the older cars. The newer cars usually have non-adjustable lifters so you might have to buy them. Don't worry, you'll get it fixed.

Yeah, this.
What I might do is take the thing for a PPI (even though it's already yours) finding a good mechanic to give you a proper diagnosis of the engine and the car's other issues for a modest amount of money, rather than trying to sell you a new engine. Obviously you should have done that *before* you bought the car, but while you can't change the past, you can at least start gathering info in a sensible way now. |

Your car is FINE This is what diesels sound like if you think that is noisey take a look at how loud my truck is, Also reving a diesel while cold is bad for it, Just look up 24 valve diesel and youll see your car is quiet

Yes, that ticking/tapping noise you hear may be the only two things:
1. Bad injectors ! ( because of that, you have rough idle ) 2. worn lifters ! dovla |
