Ike and ews error

I just got my scanner in the mail the other day and tried connecting it to my car but realized I need to get the 20 point connector for under the hood. I was getting a connection error with the Ike and ews before I got the 20 pin connector and now I'm getting them again with the connector. I have been reading about soldering pins 7+8 together and 1+2 but when I took apart the scanner it looks nothing like what I have been seeing. Also the soldering should only be for coding which I want to do anyways but it should still be able to read the errors and scan my car. I have a 2000 323i. Any help or ideas?

i have the same problem on my 2000 318i.i am starting to suspect something might be burned or cut.fuses, cables or relay that link the plugs to the modules.i guess you can only read the DME and gearbox right?if so what codes do you get?
